The message about "may not have installed correctly" is just because your using an old installer and its not handing off correctly back to the operating system. When an installer completes an install, it should hand a return code back to the OS to say success or failure. Some older installers dont do this. As a result, that message is typically just windows saying, I know you were trying to install something, and I know its finished, but it hasn';t told me if it succeeded or failed.

What motherboard have you got Garry (i'm assuming the sound card is on the motherboard?)

I select the Install properly option and it seems to go away and work OK

I get lots of updates that won't load because I don't have administration rights but I am logged in as administrator

I had an inboard sound but the usual sound distortion when changing view was terrible so we put the card in from the old machine.

The correct driver was found but I get the error

CTREGVSU.EXE cannot be installed

It is a Creative SB X-Fi

Even though is doesn't install I do have sound by only from the centre small speaker of my 5:1 system

The on-board show realtek High Definition Audio and four instances of NVIDIA High Definition Audio....not sure what that is about

I had a few instances of pics not loading on web pages but I used the compatibility button on the top bar and that gets it to open older browser pages and it worked a treat.

You shouldn't log on as "Administrator" you should create an account, for argument sake called "Garry" and add it to the administrators group. Most things shouldn't need old style administrator access as it poses a significan security risk. If you find you have a program that does need this access, simply right click on the exe file and select the compatibility tab. Then put a tick in "Run this program in compatibility mode" and select Windows XP SP3 and click OK. From now on Win7 will treat this exe as though it was running in Windows XP SP3 and give it old style admin access.

Re the sound drivers, Creative have always been rubish at writing drivers, ask DM!

You'd probably be better using the on board one, they are generally very good these days, it sounds as though you'd maybe got old drivers for it, or it needed confiruring properly?

Do you know the make and model of the motherboard? I can try and find the best drivers for it and send you the links.

Sound drivers can be a pig in these posh days of HD sound coming with graphics cards too. I chased a problem for days on my previous rebuild.. sound drivers not found! I kept putting the mobo drivers disc in and it said it was installed. I eventually found it was the HD sound off the ATI graphics card I'd not installed I have an EXCLAM in SYSTEM now after the GTX550Ti was installed but I CBA to chase it. Everything works and I have sound so it can stay put

Yep, as Dave says, almost all graphics cards that have an HDMI connection will have an audio driver installed too, but its only really used if you use an HDMI connection between your monitor and the PC. Sometimes where a graphics card has two HDMI connectors there will be a sound device associated with each one, meanting you could have 3 sound cards showing in device manager.

lol, Garry, thats almost identical to mine!

Same CPU, Same Memory, Same graphics card, almost the same motherboard, mins the P8P67

Let me see what I can find...

Right Garry, in the ZIP file below are various drivers, BIOS updates etc.

BIOS:-

Extract the file P8H67-M-PRO-ASUS-1106.ROM to a usb memory stick. Shut the compouter down. Plug in the memory stick. Switch the computer on and go into the BIOS. select "update BIOS" and point it at the file on the USB key.

Intel Chipset:-

Start Windows, log on and in the intel chipset folder within the zip file run infinst_autol.exe. Accept the defaults and you will need to reboot when it finishes.

Once restarted go into control panel, programs and remove the realtek audio driver, reboot. When the system starts up again install the driver in the Audio folder in the zip file.

I've included netwok and USB drivers if you need them, but you may not.

Uninstall any of the ASUS bundeled crap that comes on the CD rom with the board. Its unnecessary.
