"After 1920, aircraft types were given a type number based on the last two digits of the year as counted from the mythical founding of Japan in 660BC by Emperor Jimmu. Added to this was a brief description of the aircraft's function. The Mitsubishi Zero was so-called because entered service in 1940 which was the Japanese year 2600, thus it was designated Type 0 Carrier Fighter."

I recalled reading about this many years ago - couldn't find the book so looked it up and found a good source.

Oh yes

Nicknames - Britannia - Whispering Giant - although most of Britannias
aircraft had individual nicknames - GNABA - Baby Ann - GANBB Bridgit
Bardot - GANBJ - Baby Jane etc etc You will notice if you look through the
Britannia registrations that GANBG was reregistered - anyone want to
guess why??

G-ANBG was re-registered G-APLL - rather a long time after the original ones and even later than the 312 BOAC series of G-AOVA-G-AOVT.

Did it take so long to figure out what it was nicknamed or is there some other reason?

The reason was that the type had suffered many delays and problems and NBG was the standard abbreiviation of No Bloody Good....so it was re registered to stop the jokes.

That is what is I think you were thinking off but the re registation was truly for that reason.

Bet it didn't stop 'em

The Britannia 100 finally went into service at about the time it was due to be replaced.

Did Britannis call Boeing 737's FLUFF when you were arround there or was that just later.

Again does anyone want to guess what that stood for.........two of the letters have alternates.


And one not many could work out was why at the beginning BMA were calling the ATP's Wigwams...Later the names got more in keeping with the dislike of the type.

I knew what NBG was for - just that PLL was either out of sequence or they registered the Britannia 100s way before they were ready for delivery such that the UK register had reached G-APL. when NBG was changed.

The registrtion G-ANBG was registered before it was built. In service and with that nickname the registered had reach G-APLL when they changed it.

The Vanguards were reserved in 1957 two years before the type flew. This was at the same time as the Comets were reserved again early.

The gap is from reservation until early in service.

It certainly wasn't out of sequence.

G-ANBG was an 1953 reg but it was officially registered (After reserve) 18-01-1956. It was re registered G-APLL 19-03-1958 and that registration was bang up to date then.

The original was reserved at the time of the first prototypes.

All I can remember from reading about it was G-ANBG was in service for a while and then was re registered with a current reg. The type entered service just over a year before the re-registration.
