Bearing in mind that many of the airlines don't actually own their engines, but rent them on a power by the hour basis, I imagine that it is the engine manufacturers who will call the shots on this. I don't know about P&W ( only a relatively minor player now) and GE , but the majority of RR engines are supplied on this basis

According to the BBC, NATS are allowing aircraft to overfly above the ash cloud. Explains the appearance of four Lufthansa flights (2 x B747, 2 x A340) en route from the US. First sightings for days.
