I'm CAPFlyer in game. I tried to add your handle and it couldn't find it. Would be cool to do some team ups for sure.

I've managed to progress to the Cleveland which means that I've now got GB, US and German tier 6 ships so time to continue with the Kirov and perhaps develop the Japanese line. Unless I choose to buy a tier 7 or above I'm not going to chase getting one - the gap is too enormous. My name in WoW is Chrispbits. I'll keep an eye out for you both.

I realized why I couldn't find your nickname. I'm logging onto the North America server. I've gotta pick the UK server.

I've just moved up to the Kuma and she's not half bad for a class 4. Plenty of fire power and a decent turn of speed to boot. In my last outing I managed to sink 1 destroyer, 1 cruiser and 2 battleships. The last battleship was a parting gift a fraction before I got obliterated.

Hi chaps,
I've found both of you using the WoWs app, and as I expected, you are both Nelsons to my Villeneuve.
Chris T: Sorry, but I've set the Cleveland aside for now. Despite your good advice, I don't seem to last more than a few minutes once I'm targetted. Of course, that's down to me, because other players do perfectly well with it, so when I return to the US cruiser tree ( which I will because US cruisers are so interesting ), I will examine my playing style once more. I think it's down to target fixation and not watching the tactical map sufficiently. Does that sound likely ?

Chris H; that's a very impressive score

. I think the best I've done so far is three sinkings, and I'm sure a lot of the HP damage would have been done by others. That was with a Kuma-class though, so as you say, she's a very useful ship. I'm now on the Furutaka ( C ) which packs a wallop, but doesn't seem quite as balanced as the Kuma. In other sessions - the other day, my premium cruiser Diana came up against the Mikasa, and so a little bit of history was repeated.
By the way, I am using the alternative battle interface, which shows the range and health of other ships, and having watched a few vids on Youtube, I've started using AP shells more with distant targets. Up until now, I've stuck mainly with HE because I thought cruisers couldn't penetrate BB armour. That's true at closer range, where the trajectory is flat and you are hitting the hull side armour, but at a distance, plunging fire will penetrate their deck armour, and the hitpoint damage is greater.
This is a cracking game if you don't have much spare time. The battles only last fifteen minutes, so it's ideal for dipping into.

I need to re-download the server selector mod so I can get on the EU server and play some with you guys occasionally, but meantime, I've started working up the Russian tiers yesterday because their new "alternate" Russian Destroyer research tree that comes with the new version this week has some very interesting ships in it that I think will be fun to play at the high tiers.
As for the Cleveland - it's a hard one to slog through, so I understand your sidelining it. The Pensacola is a bit better, so the slog was worth it, but then again, I was mainlining US ships at the time so I didn't use (or care) what the JPN ships were and the UK ships weren't quite available. I'm interested somewhat in the UK tree, but that might be later with me picking a single class to mainline (probably BBs as the UK had some pretty interesting Dreadnaughts during WWI and WWII) and only keeping balance with the US tree as I'm doing now.

Indeed Chris T. the British battleship line is going to be interesting - there are some obvious candidates for each tier...and maybe some not-so-obvious ones. By the way, I have a book by one of your compatriots - The British Battleship 1906 - 1946, by Norman Friedman. From what it says on the inside of the jacket, he's very well known in the USA.

Yes, Dr. Friedman is fairly well known within the Naval History circles and worked for quite a few years for the US Navy (where most of his publishing has come from/for). I actually have one of his books - U.S. Naval Weapons, that was given to me by a friend as part of a larger group of reference-type books he had from the 1970s and 1980s.
He's also been an on-screen contributor for several TV documentaries and series, usually on Naval topics.

I'm having a go at the bigger stuff and making slow progress with South Carolina. My God that ship is slow. It either takes ages to get involved in the action or running away is not quite as expeditious as you'd hope. The oddest thing happen is that I got into a battle with only two BS on each side but loads of destroyers. Now why doesn't that happen when I'm driving a cruiser?

LOL. You and me both.
I was playing tonight and was driving my Texas around for 5 or 6 rounds and not a single CV was in the games. I switch to the New Mexico and both rounds had CVs.
It seems like the MatchMaker is against us quite a bit doesn't it?
