In case this helps, port numbers never usually change if its SMTP and POP for e-mail no matter what OS either, because they are internationally agreed standards and set in stone. As a simple test, you could try opening a command prompt on your PC, the try typing the following command and press enter: -
ping mail.btinternet.com
If you get four "Reply from 217.12.13.134: etc... " its probably a port issue, since the name has resolved to its IP address. If you get
"Ping request could not find host mail.btinternet.com etc, " then you've probably got a DNS fault, i.e. your router's lost contact with the BT Domain name servers or is getting the wrong ip address from them for the mail servers. You could also try pinging the bt mail server direct using the Ip address I found, i.e.
ping 217.12.13.134
if you get replies for that then the network route to the servers is probably OK so its almost definitely either DNS or a network port blocking fault, if you don't get replies then you have routing error outside in BT land someplace..

Hi Gordon
You're probably right about that but I think they DO change according to your method of access. I tried getting onto BT last week but failed due to not being able to remember my password (sri.. I'm repeating myself) but saw on another site somewhere on BT port settings for those manually setting their email up. The settings appeared to be different between Outlook and Outlook Express though why, I've absolutely no idea
I'd not changed my system at all.. not even downloaded anything new when suddenly, I couldn't get my bt email from OE.. then I could.. then I couldn't and on it went over a few days last week. I found this evening from one of my girls at work that BT were supposed to be stopping the BT Yahoo explorer site (where you also get your mail unless you use OE or another mail prog) on Sep 1st though she is still able to access. I'd wondered if BT were fiddling around with the mail in anticipation of BT Yahoo being pulled but I've not been able to find anything to support this

She was notified some weeks ago that BT Yahoo was going and instructed to use another browser and mail prog. Can't recall seeing this myself but then again.. I may have binned it

Nice to her its speaking to mother again Rick...
Believe it or not, If I had a quid for the number of times I've had to ask the question "have you tried switching it off andf on again?" I'be, well, a bit less skint than I'm normally...
I've come different ports being used depending on what program you have in the past. Normally its because they have set things up to help prevent unwanted access by non customers. Best to check your network is speaking to the other end at all first, then start poking around with sensitive settings like ports etc...

Must be getting late, I'm starting to see all sorts of words and letters missing from my post above after re-reading it, and its not the PC's fault.

Hope it still makes sense.

It's got to the point now that our IT Helpdesk at work won't even begin to talk to you unless you've turned it off and on again!
They reckon it's saved a fortune in wasted man-hours.

Bomb Disposal guy "Vista"
Moz "we're all going to die!"

the other is "my Name Is Earl" which is the first funny American show since the Three Stooges

Well.. after all that, the first thing I did when I had this problem last week was turn my router off and got straight in to my bt email

However, that was the one and only time it worked all week so.. was my router playing up too?? Odd that it's fixed itself again over the week
I hope it's the end of your probs Rick
