What should I be looking for.
Schweppes India Tonic Water old boy...or a tonic water that lists 'quinine' as an ingredient ;) Maybe it's not a US thing *-)

..and to think this started as a joke

Strangely enough, many months ago, I woke in the night with a nasty cramp through my ankle...I was hopping and jumping and it wouldn't clear, very painful. I was limping for a couple of days, couldn't put weight on my foot. A neighbour, who is a nurse, saw me limping and asked what the problem was...when I said cramp she said 'Ahh, drink lots of tonic water, for the quinine...' So I did and later that day the cramp had completely disappeared....... *-)

Sorry, off topic folks...

Derek ;)

Gin and tonic and a slice of lemon ;)

When you're sitting on the verandah don't forget to wear an immaculately pressed white cotton suit and Panama hat....

I prefer to use cats as my designated drivers. The cops aren't as likely to mess with you. ;)

I went to bed early last night after an emotional day and a few stiff gins and tonic :'( . A very topical thing to do by the way the conversation here went!

Joe - you get bonus points for drinking Bombay Sapphire - that's the one for real gin drinkers and it's what I use. The bottle lives permanently in the freezer as any hint of tepidity will ruin the crispness! As Del says, the tonic must be Schweppes and none of your diet stuff. Nothing else will do. I seem to remember that in the US it used to be referred to simply as 'Schweppes' as they didn't market any other products over there. The tonic is naturally kept in the fridge - along with the drinking glasses so they have a good frosting. A twist of lime is my preferred garnish as a slice gets up your nose! And you'll need a fancy swizzle stick to keep swirling those ice cubes round. Get an old airline one off eBay.

As the ice melts the drink becomes watered down so you'll need to 'refresh' it when you get about half way. The panama hat and linen jacket are preferable but optional - as is a red carnation in the buttonhole. I have actually got those items of clothing in my wardrobe but only wear them to garden parties. To which I no longer get invited as people think I'm a wanker but now that I'm Royalty I'm expecting a flood of invitations.

As a variation, add a dash of angostura bitters for a pink gin and tonic. Or if you're really serious you could try the British Navy classic drink of pink gin. This is a cocktail glass of very chilled Plymouth (sweet) gin with a dash of angostura bitters. No ice so the gin should be shaken (not stirred!) in a cocktail shaker and served in a cold glass. Two is probably too many!

Remember that I was trained in cocktail mixing and serving by BOAC! The drinking bit was self-taught :worried:

A little trick I was shown, and it does require a bit of forethought, is to pre-slice some limes and put them in the freezer compartment. You can then substitute them for ice cubes.

All this talk of G&Ts has left me no option but to spend the rest of the day pleasantly imbibing...I don't have a Panama though and can't decided whether to wear my DPM boonie or my Zimbabaloola bush hat instead........... *-)

What a joy it is to read such an innovative, informative and well mannered thread. I've not been keeping up with it from the start as well.. the whole Royal Wedding thing has been done to death in the UK (and why not I hear you say) and I didn't want to read about it here also. However, I find myself going back through the thread now and you know what.. it still makes sense

BTW Ian.. let me know if you're going to pop in. I'll have to order Schweppes Tonic Water in as I now stock Britvic (I'm cheap). That said.. there's always a supply of Bombay Sapphire available ;)
