Del,

The device may be USB2 and your ports may not be enabled for it. Have you checked in your BIOS that your ports are USB2 (and not just original USB) enabled?

Thanks for the replies guys..

I think I've already found most of the internet links that refer to the error message but there doesn't seem to be any particular solution..a lot assume that the printer is showing in the Printer folder..in my case it's not.

I already have 'show hidden devices' enabled in Device Manager, that's where the printer is registering..I've tried uninstalling USB entries and letting XP re-install them but that didn't change anything. I've checked everything from the BIOS outwards..more than once  I've trawled the registry..under USB and USBprint the printer is showing

After mulling it over at work I came home, uninstalled everything again then just plugged the usb cable in and let the new hardware wizard do it..I pointed it to the drivers and it started loading, then a new error message: 'The class installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device'... ..then it carried on installing for a few moments then the original error popped up: 'Specified port not found'...it's beginning to sound like a dodgy ship's navigator..

Thanks again guys...I'm going to bed..

Derek

Del, a few more ideas found via Google. None of them are specific to your MFP, but the symptoms seem to be the same.

You will not see ALL of them without running the first command. There are things that XP likes to keep hidden even when it is supposed to be showing hidden devices.
