Hi guys

just wondering, who prefers what?

i have been flying some planes with photo real textures lately, at first i hated them, but i have been hooked as of late,
all though some textures look naff photoreal, others look awesome,
i was just curious what you guys prefer!

TBH the best combination is both.....with certain detail photo-real and the main textures painted.......but the is no option for a combination

Photo reals that have been done well look great, but if not they just look crap.

I think it depends on the painter. I have seen some terrible photo real textures and some pretty decent efforts.

Photo real jobs are great for screenshots but I always find some niggling error that annoys me and stops me flying it. A light reflection or shadow on the texture for example. For detail and quality you can't beat a 100% hand drawn texture, however sometimes you can get acceptable quality by compromising and making certain parts such as squadron markings photo-real, I still prefer to do it by hand if possible though.

Photoreal looks great if done well, however sometimes it doesn't look quite right. For example this series is from a fotoreal paint the plane looks great, BUT...you can judge for your selves. Note the shine effect:

you can't beat a 100% hand drawn texture,
Try doing the Thomas Cook tail :-#

I made a point of taking some photos of the tail when I flew on one a couple of years ago to finish a repaint.

I'm certainly not good enough to do this one freehand (or don't have enough commitment  ).

The thing that strikes me about the top pic of those three is the intake and undercarriage just do not match the rest of the paint .

I do use some photo's myself......the Hot Air titles on the Viscount and the leaping lion for BAF and the leopard on the Guernsey Airlines Viscount/Herald and the JAF Viscount....but they are used as part of the paint rather than a photoreal paint as such.

Each has advantages and both need to be done properly.
