Tweakers Anonymous

So there I was last night at 1am. The lights are off, my wife went to bed 4 hours ago. The house is quiet, apart from the hum of the computer and the sound of the keyboard. I've got my Dornier Do-27 on the tarmac at Juneau Airport (PAJN). The door is open, the engines are off. In the top corner, the two digits that represent the frames per second are changing colour - red to yellow to red and back to yellow. I've got fs9.cfg open in one window, a tweakers document in another. I'm changing a parameter here, reloading the scenario, checking the fps again. I do this non-stop for 3 hours. For 3 consecutive days. Without actually starting the engines or flying. It is then I realise ...

My name is Seb Gevers, and I am a tweaker.

I've got three great scenery addons (irish, scotflight and glacierbay) which contain something like 30-40 great airport and fantastic scenery. Of those 30-odd airport, there are 3 that give me dodgy fps. And they're the ones i've become obsessed with. Rather than just doing the obvious (i.e. stay away!) I spent 3 days trying to get an exta fps out of the application.

Does anyone recognise this behaviour? Has anyone else become so obsessed with getting the ultimate performance that you forget the reason we have FS9 on our machines - the sheer love of flying?

I can sympathise with you, I'm a compulsive tweaker. I think only 20% of my time is spent flying, the other 80% is tweaking. Occasionally it's what I class as "fun" tweaking. I might get bitten by the bug for a particular aircraft and produce a stream of repaints for it, this is "fun" tweaking as I get to be a little bit creative and have quite a sense of satisfaction when completing a good repaint. However there is a lot of "bad" tweaking that I do as well. I can almost guarantee that when I get a new aircraft things will be wrong, particularly with the flight model. It just won't feel "right" or it will be some way off published figures, and I always take it upon myself to fix things. I can spend weeks going in and out of flight simulator trying to get a realistic feeling of flight into an .air file (I think almost all FS models have bad flight models, none feel as though they have any mass and consequentially feel as though they are all flying on rails) and by the time I accomplish what I set out to do I'm sick and tired of the aircraft and won't touch it again for another three months. There are actually only a few aircraft that I've never feel the urge to tinker with, and funnily enough these are most of the CBFSim models that I fly. :welldone:

Phew, I am not alone!!!
:prayer: :prayer: I can't help it Doctor, I just have to browse the downloads for the gizmo that will improve performance/effects/looks etc. Deep down I know my system is rubbish, but even if I had a Cray I doubt if I could stop fiddling.

I to have a tweak problem, constantly looking at what I can do to improve things. Like most I spend more time tweaking than actually flying. Sometimes I splash out on new bits in the hope that the performance will be improved. I wish I could just sim for the fun of flying, but it ain't happening at the moment.

although alot of my tweeking is on the AC themselves
or scenery , not so much the software hardware

consider it foreplay

Tonks,
What do you mean it's not real? You'll be telling me there's no such person as Santa Claus next.
