RNAS Lee-on-Solent 1962 and 1970 - Colour Photos

Just to redress the balance a little, here's a small selection for the naval aviation fans on the forum. I've combined two Daedalus "Air Days" (August 1962 and July 1970) because the vast majority of the slides in their boxes are flying shots which - obviously taken without a telephoto lens - are unusable here. I thought this was an odd way for such an experienced and capable photographer to waste expensive colour slide film but maybe when projected from the original slides onto a large screen the result was acceptable - unfortunately, when scanned and reduced for the forum, they're not! :-(

All photos are by Michael Harries and are © 2007 The Tangmere Military Aviation Museum Trust.

Great stuff Pete

The detail and quality of thses pic is amazing as some of the older members will know that did not come easily in those days.

Nice to see a green Sea Vixen......non a common subject that I can think of

Ain't that the truth! The quality now being produced by even basic, low-cost digital cameras these days is quite excellent and as for the high end stuff...!

I've been doing a little research on prices and in 1964 a 36-exposure 35mm Ilford colour slide film (the British equivalent of Kodachrome) cost 28/- (£1.40) including processing and postage. Now that may sound very reasonable until you convert the money to today's values when it's the equivalent of £19.40! :o I haven't found camera prices for the 60s yet but I'm sure they'll be just as high. One thing I think we can say is that with those sort of prices, Michael must have spent a fair old slice of his disposable income on his hobby!

I had a basic camera for my 11th birthday in 1968 it cost £10 and I had to borrow a light meter to set the exposure as we couldn't afford one.

Consider by Dad was getting about £18 per week....bringing home perhaps £14 and you could get a car that was a good runner but needed attention for £15

The lens was soft compared to what were see her and no talk of interchangeable lenses. We could could only afford black and white film.

All along the quality of these has been impressive....almost unique away form professionally taken images.

Lovely photos!

Quick question.. the Admirals Barge Vamp.. what colour is it actually meant to be? I've been meaning to repaint the AS one since I heard that the colour might be wrong..

From memory (as in I have not researched this  ), it is close to a colour called 'Brunswick Green' in the old Humbrol colours. Not sure if that is any help, Dan ;-)
