DIY Scenery

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying either E-Z Scenery (Abacus) or Instant Scenery (Flight 1) to do a bit of DIY as I can't be doing with all the learning associated with "proper" scenery creation software. STUPID
Anybody got experience of either (or both) ?

What about Rwy12, the price is better!

Andy,
I did have a look at that a while ago but the readme file made it sound rather complicated. I did use Lago's FSSE in FS2002 and that was really simple. I only want to add a few building and vehicle here and there - nothing complex.

Degsy,

Hi Degsy,
I have EZ-Scenery and it works ok. Just remember not to fart around with the AF2 file in any other program until you're happy with what you've done in EZ-Scenery as to do so will make whatever scenery you've added permanent. Of course, if you have the original.. you can start again

As you can see, I'm well versed in the whole scenery making lark

I have E-Z Scenery, but can't say I've used it very often (the novelty wore off after I spruced up my favorite airfields with a few extra scenery pieces). I'll echo what Dave said. It's really the program's only vice. Other than that, it's extremely use to use, and the interface is fairly intuitive. Good luck, Degsy!

Here is my view:
Rwy12 is clumsy, and you can't position things super-accurately. When it came along it was good, but in truth it has been overtaken by later products. It is free, though.
EZ scenery lets you see what you are positioning and moving around, so you know what things will look like without restarting FS (with the exception, I should say, of when you move scenery items that you created on a previous occasion, but that's a minor issue).
I don't know much about Instant Scenery other than having read it is similar to EZ scenery and is particularly suited to FSX.
All of these use pre-defined scenery libraries so you cannot create your own representations of buildings etc with them. EZ Scenery, at least, can read and use Rwy12 libraries as well as its own, plus the many additional free libraries that scenery designers have kindly made for us.
I'm not sure about the comments about AFCAD changes being irreversable. None of these products affect AFCAD, you would need to edit these separately using Lee Swordy's software and providing you make your changes in a separate file at a different scenery layer they will not affect any other AFCAD files on your system, temporarily or permanently. Regardless of that, you will have backups to revert to, won't you?
Hope this helps,
John

Hi John,
I agree that changing the afcad does seem to be a bit of a red herring but I can't think what else I might have done. I'd started populating a very basic 'Portsmouth' with a hangar, tower, the odd building here and there when I found a much better hangar. I opened it back up again and everything I'd done before was firmly glued into place. The only other thing I'd done in the meantime was add parking and taxiways. The answer is out there but I can't for the life of me find it
