I didn't want to Hijack the other thread about it.

Was just wondering what would give me the best experience. I know that if I want something I will have to work damned hard to get it, but just wondered what other views were

Ahh you see that is the prob. No disrespect to to Tom as I know that is one job I would go for given the chance.

But I just think I that I could have more chances becoming ground crew in the AAC. No?

What qualifications have you got? How old are you? Have you had a look at http://www.raf.mod.uk/careers/ and looked at the different jobs. Guys who are in then go for aircrew stand a better chance.

Robin, give the internet a search about the AAC. Most of us here are well past it in terms of up to date info. I can tell you all about the AAC and RAF from years ago, but it will be as useful as learning about the Glider Pilot Regiment :roll: :roll:

What Tom says about it being easier to go aircrew after joining as something else first is true, not that he did it ;-) The trouble is, if they find a fitness/aptitude issue (beyond ground employment) at the aircrew selection stage, you will be a bit stuck if you have not joined in a trade you will be happy in for your whole service. In my day you could get into Airman Aircrew with a handful of GCE's (GCSE's now), today I assume they will want A level's at least.

Oh, thats one more than they used to want, 5 GCE's was for Pilots and Navs

Robin it is years since I was in the forces but if you're interested in flying then take the advice from Tonks, firstly there is more choice of the type of positions available for aircrew in the RAF whereas in the Army and after spending a year footslogging it and digging holes there would still be no guarrantee that a flying position will be offered and you'd be stuck doing something that you don't enjoy.

Robin, I doubt if anything has changed since my time as a Brown Job...you can't go directly into the AAC..I may be wrong... but anyway, as already stated, the options are limited. If you want a military aircrew career then it has to be the RAF.

I was constantly applying for transfer to AAC aircrew from Royal Signals..but was always told no, I'm too intelligent.... :roll:

A pilot recently joined us on the Merlin force after being a Lynx pilot. He changed over because the guys in the AAC do one tour flying and then the rest of their career behind a desk. The AAC weren't meant to fly. If they were, god would have painted the sky green ;-)
