The Avengers @ RAF Hamelin

Heres a bit of Saturday morning fun: A whole hour of Mrs. Peel and Steed running around a RAF airbase. Some good close-ups of the buildings (especially the officers club) for the scenery designers, and one De Haviland Mosquito makes a brief appearance. The opening intro and closing credits still seem cool after all these years. The plot is bit on the lame side, but I guess in 1965 anything was believable. However, Diana Rigg more than makes it all worthwhile

I remember seeing the episode some years ago. At the time I didn't bother to look up which airfield "RAF Hamelin" was (although I assumed it was somewhere around NW London, succh as Leavesden).

Turns out I wasn't too far wrong; it's RAF Bovingdon, used a couple of years later for the crimial 633 Sqn and it's sequel.

I watched that episode a few weeks ago. I love The Avengers - true the plots get a little crazy but as you say Diana Rigg certainly makes it all worthwhile and then some. Didn't mind Joanna Lumley in The New Avengers either. ;-)

Gary, I borrowed the 65 season DVD set from a friend who is also a big fan. I don't know if they are on TV here in the US (not on my Verizon Fios)or in the UK at the moment. My friend broght them from Amazon (US) for a very reasonable price, I think he said around $15. I am sure Amazon.co.uk wll also have them available. I just checked and they do, but they are far more expensive than the American DVD's which, unfortunatly won't work in the UK.

Cheers Nigel

Have you got the one where ther go in a BEA Herald.....complete with a fireplace and piano :o .....some sort of party

Then they find they have flown across the world without any pilots

That's how I remember it...it's a long time ago :worried:

Gary,

Haven't seen that one yet but then I haven't watched them all - I certainly think I would remember a BEA Herald with a fireplace and piano sans pilots despite my challenged memory. ;-)

BTW the RAF airbase episode was called "The Hour That Never Was" Clever tittle, no doubt inspired by the film and book "The Man Who Never Was" which is a true story.
