OK i think i found my bottleneck...?

I thought i had bought PC5300 667 mem but on checking CPUID i came across this strange puzzler...?



Its only showing 333 Mhz....?

Should i upgrade to 800 Mhz for my system...?

Itss 667 DDR Tony.... that meanys the bus only runs at 333, but its triggered on the leading and trailing edge of the pulse making its actual speed 2 x 333 ;-)

Don't worry, Tony - that's the basic frequency of your RAM as set by the manufacturer in the controller chip on your modules. It is what the system refers to, to find out how to run your memory.

So - take your basic memory speed - 333MHz.

It's DDR - double data rate - so multiply that base frequency by 2 - 333 x 2 = 666MHz.

It's also DDR2 - so multiply that frequency by two - and VOILA! you get the speed your memory can run at - 666 x 2 = 1332MHz (or actually 1333MHz - which is the speed of the P35 chipsets in modern Core 2 Duo boards).

Mine is the same.

EDIT - huh, beaten to it! - but I reckon I explained it better!

What would happen if i went out and bought 1066 mem tomorrow.....would i see a nice improvement...?

In terms of FS performance guys the bottle neck is your Disk. Also FS (like any other 32bit application) will never use any more than 2GB so it really isn't worth it.... you dabblers!

Also bare in mind that the speed of the memory is kind of irrelivant if the bus taking that data to the cpu can't run properly at that speed. The optimum speed is where the memory bus and cpu clock are in happy harmony.

This is one of the reason why the old RAMBUS standard was so good... it didn't double clock, my old P4 system with RAMBUS RAM actually ran at 1066 and that was 4 years ago!

I'm pretty sure that Sony actually still use RAMBUS in the PS3.

In the end computers are no different to anything else
