A Grand Day Out in Leicester

A long time ago, before some of the members here were born :o , I was a member of a Nottingham aviation enthusiasts group. They seemed to know all the good air shows so for a short while in the late 70s I joined a car load of blokes who would head off around the Midlands armed with notebooks and cameras.

I have just scanned in the negatives from a grand day out at Leicester on 7 July 1979. These are a couple of examples - I will put up a link for the album when I have put it together.

Note the free and easy access, and the lack of barriers between the public and rotating props! A different era.

Thanks for sharing your pics, Ian. Love the Hornet Moth in the background of the first pic. :dancer:

Lovely to see, being my local airfield. May I ask what kind of event this was? A fly-in, or an actual airshow?

It was a fly-in, I've got it noted as a PFA Rally - almost 29 years ago!

I have only been back to the airfield once since then - for a Christmas Party in a big tent!

The public could wander around the field without restriction.

I seem to have taken photos of most of the foreign visitors. What is now intriguing is what is visible in the background that I did not photo :brick:

Anyway a couple more to keep you amused:

I think what strikes me as different about GA and military events, is that you could, in theory, replicate that event today, nearly 30 years on!

Might have to borrow a few short sleeved t-shirts and flares, though... :worried:
