Thats a brilliant site Paul. Wasn't that searchlight radar on Eagle huge! Thats probably the best collection I've seen yet. Thanks for the link!

Yes it's big but I always thought it looked kind of cool. Apparently the Type 984 "dustbin" was a much better radar set than the Type 965 "bedstead" that Ark Royal had (something to do with 3D but don't ask, I don't know  ). Eagle was also in much better condition than Ark but when one had to be scrapped Devonport (where Ark was based) needed jobs and politics being what it is...... Ach! You nearly got me started.

Those of a naval :RN: persuasion :RN: might enjoy this one http://www.axfordsabode.org.uk/index-rn.htm - there's some aircraft carriers in there so it's sort of flight sim related and nearly on topic ;-)

All the best, Paul

984 could give you Range, Bearing and Elevation (i.e. all three dimensions), whereas 965 could only give Range and Bearing (effectively two dimensions). Looking at the design of 984 it must have got elevation by tilting the radar up and down using a pencil beam to individually interrogate contacts, 965 on the other hand would have had a vertically orientated fan beam which would have got everything down a bearing at once. Obviously there are pros and cons to each although it's slightly worrying to think the RN hasn't had a 3D air search radar since Eagle was de-commissioned, the T45 will reintroduce one but it uses an Electronically Scanned Phased Array which is very clever but a bit tricky to explain without diagrams, suffice to say it can interrogate many contacts at once in range bearing and elevation as well as doing a surface search and lots of other modes.
Obviously you can always get altitude from mode C, if it's turned on which of course isn't an ideal requirement in a military radar.
