W3K HDD on WXP system?

Post by DanKH »

Hi

Any shortcuts of getting a Win2003 server formatted harddisk, recognised on a WinXP computer?

Both af NTFS, but just settinn in the HDD doesn't seem to let WinXP be able to read the drive....

The disk is recognized, but XP wnat to start reformatting it....

I would let it, if only I didn't had files on the Win2003 HDD that I needed BADLY!

Any help/tips from our resident Gurus?

Dan

I always use my ICI box in such cases

I put the HD in that read off the info then it's safe for any attemoted reformatting.

Hi Dan

It is an external drive device that you put a HD into rather than all sealed up

So you can swap the HD that in in there.

Hi Folks

Dan -
Were any physical jumpers set appropriately, (assume it's to be slave).

Did XP detect the disk after first boot,
with the "Found new hardware" message ?

Did you force a rescan -
1) Open Computer Management (Local).
2) In the console tree, click Device Manager.
3) On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.
4) In the console tree, click Disk Management.
5) On the Action menu, click Rescan Disks.

How is it displayed in the MMC Disk Management snapin ?

Worth getting one if you can

I have used mine twice to save stuff and my brothers as well and if you get a new HD you can put the old one in that box and pull off all your stuff across in one go.

Hi Paul

Yes (cable select)
Yes
Yes ;-)

It was taken from a PC that lost its Power Unit

Just pulled it out, and the inserted into my home winXP machine.... hoping I could just restore the few files I needed and then reformat the disc....

Is that W2003 disk bootable?

Start it up in the home PC and copy files to a USB drive of some sort?

Or you could try some of the Linux tools to see if they see both disks :o

Hi Folks

Dan -
A few more questions -

Have you tried the device manager "Troubleshooter" ?

Does the disk require a driver ?

Is the XP box Home or Pro ?

Was the w2003 disk "dynamic" or "basic" ?
XP home can't read "dynamic" disks.

EDIT
What size is the disk ?
What SP is the XP box ? (pre SP1 size limit 137GB)

ISTR
All disks require initialisation,
which effectively places a 'registration mark' in the MBR.

Possibly the w2003 disk's MBR (or GPT) sig isn't recognised by XP.

How is it displayed in the MMC Disk Management snapin ?

To access the disk management tool -
Right click on My Computer
Select Manage from the context menu.

The MMC will be displayed
with 3 categories in the left:
- System Tools
- Storage
- Services and applications.

Select Storage.
The menu tree will expand.
From the dropped down list select Disk Management.

The right pane will display the disks with partitions, as well as the CD-ROM / DVD-ROM drives.

On the w2003 server -
were you using "Norton GoBack" (previously known as Wildfile GoBack, Adaptec GoBack, and Roxio GoBack)
or possibly "Acronis Image For Windows",
as these modify the MBR.
