Dont know if this has been posted before but was reading the BBC News Website before and came across this:

If you look in the newspapers, you will find that this spelling has been adopted recently. Bear in mind that it is transliteration from Urdu or Punjabi, so there is no "correct" spelling

Reminds me of the various spellings of Colonel Gadffi of Libya (Khadaffi and others)
Diffiult whenever names are translated

I don't think you need to eat your hat. I think the problem with these words is that fashions in spelling them seem to change, as also does pronunciation. Do you remember when the BBC insisted on describing Kabul as Korbool. Fortunately, it didn't last long!
