Alphasim have released their Payware S-55 and Whirlwind as Freeware, which should delight fans of classic British helicopters. Go fill yer boots!

The best news is the
FSX model is NEW, with many improved features (I also reckon I see a slight FPS improvement). Therefore even if you already have the Payware FSX version is is well worth downloading and installing this new one for free.

I forgot to mention, in the Freeware version the sounds are aliased to the R-22. For those who bought the Payware but are now installing the Freeware version you'll need to replace the new sounds subdirectory with your original. This will restore the proper sounds from
http://www.turbinesoundstudios.com that came in the original release.
The problem with the red beacon shining into the VC still exists, but can easily be fixed by using AlphaSim_S55_Beacon.zip found over at
www.hovercontrol.com in their Downloads section.

I was going to post about the very same thing, Airtrooper.
Their list of freeware has expanded quite a bit recently. Not only that; more and more of their payware is being upgraded for FSX, including the Hampden. From what I read before their forums closed, the Hampden wasn't a huge success, but I love it and I'm really pleased they've 'Tenned' it.

If you have troubles getting her trimmed (for me the tail tends to drop in FSX) you might check out this chopper trim gauge at avsim.

If you don't have the above mentioned sounds from the original (left out on purpose so don't assume they are also now freeware unless Phil posts them as such), there is also a sound pack at
SOH that is based on the default Robinson and a T-6 Harvard pack. Look under "FS2004/Sounds".
For some reason the textures in the FSX version are based on a pre-release set I made and not the final ones I painted for the original FS9 release. So you might want to convert the FS9 set to DDS for a few more visual details.
Thanks for the tip on the beacon.
Anyone know how to get some air in that left rear tire?

Or you can use this revised FDE I did to level it out and let it hover perfectly flat.

Thank you, I was kind of chuffed at how good it turned out with the weight and power settings, probably the best ( and only ! ) piston FDE I did and the CH-53 the best turbine FDE.
I'm now porting that base FDE set into the freeware S-51 and setting it all up per specs we have in memory of Greg Pepper, Tim is doing new texture sets and engine sounds and the complete package should be loaded up in the near future. That package will be FS9 only I'm afraid.

Is there any chance you can re-upload the revised FDE Michael? The link in your post appears to be dead.

There should be no need for the revised FDE now, as there is a new version of the Whirlwind now at "all nodes". If you downloaded it early on you may want to re-download it now. This fixes most issues and adds extra bonus features (such as generic spec map for addon textures).
