Nice Tonks
There was a fascinating aritcle back in the early seventies in either Air Pictorial of Aircraft Illustrated
Called Warlike VC 10's it has artist impressions and drawings of severval VC 10 military propsals none of which had of course been taken up......well apart from the existing transport/medevac at the time.
Of course one of the proposals was the tanker, later to become a reality.
Some of the designs compromised the VC 10's clean lines to the point of hideousness such is the miltary need
It seems from other sources at the time there was quite a strong push for the VC 10 platform being new build insted of converting existing V bombers but the fact the airframes existed seemed to be a cost saving the authorities were deterimined to make.

I'll second Tonks' suggestion!
Actually, if you buy it from
Amazon through this link you'll even help me run my site.... (shameful plug ends here ;-) )
Edit: just noticed that Amazon doesn't stock it yet. The link in Tonks' post above leads to the author himself so that might be a tad quicker.

Thanks Tonks, I've been thinking about getting that myself. I've been a little bit cautious of books like this ever since I bought the Crowood One-Eleven book.

I read somewhere that the Nimrod would have been Trident based had it not been for a few uncompleted Comet airframes knocking about at either Hatfield or Chester/Broughton and a need to find work for HSA staff at the former Avro sites in Manchester. Likewise there were proposed military versions of the 1-11 and 146, the latter getting as far as a flying mockup (G-BSTA, a camo-painted 146-100QT with a wooden pole pretending to be a refuelling probe!)

Amazon now 'Out of Stock', maybe everyone here has bought them all! I will add it to regular monthly Amazon order later.

As Jelle mentioned, Amazon haven't had them in stock yet, which makes me a little relieved that I didn't pre-order it from them, and Chris Gibson was selling direct.
