Couple of comparison shots

Been meaning to do this for a while - and may do a few more when I've plundered my HDD for more images:
Just a couple of real-life shots, and similar angles on the superb Edinburgh Extreme - a stunning work :flying:

I am certainly considering adding more of the 'extreme' range to my sim, although I've had this installed for a fair while, I only recently started mooching around again after the postings about Belfast extreme :flying:

Flown on both of those, though obviously the pepper grinder wasn't about when I was using the Tridents. The Delta stewardesses coming back from Atlanta seemed to be from another planet. Some passengers insisted they were not abusing strange substances - just indulging in laid back Southern hospitality.

I hadn't realised that some of the flights might have been courtesy of Peter McL. Perhaps he could confirm whether one of the pilots was shooting a line one time we were waiting at Edinburgh, on a fast turn-round for a Shuttle flight to London.

For the younger forum members, BA ran a shuttle service between Edinburgh and London back in the early 80s. This guaranteed that anyone turning up with a full fare ticket would get a seat, and a second aircraft would be laid on to take any additional passengers (plus layabouts with standby tickets). This could result in the backup aircraft turning round rather sharpish, and Edinburgh had quite a short runway for Tridents at the time. So the brakes took a pasting sometimes.

On the occasion in question, we were loaded up and then I noticed that the co-pilot kept disappearing and returning. On one of his trips out of the cockpit the pilot came on the blower to tell the passengers that we would be on our way as soon as the brakes cooled sufficiently from the previous landing - in case they were needed for an aborted take-off. He went on to explain how the requisite brake temperature was measured. The co-pilot had to keep his fingers on the brake disc for a specified period of time, and if he failed they were still too hot. At least the co-pilot got a cheer when we did finally depart.

Well I can confirm that there is a certain element of truth there...But I can't remember the exact numbers but certain actions like an abandoned take-off required a minimum period of brake cooling before taxying out for another go...I certainly never sent my first officer out to touch test the brake disks but I could imagine after a hard braked landing on Edi's short runway and then a rapid on time turnaround, that one would wonder just how hot those brakes were :worried:

A great story though somehow, I don't think HS stipulated touching the disc for a given number of seconds as a means of checking if it was safe to go or not :lol:

According to the 'good book'.. waiting times depend heavily on landing weight, speed during an aborted takeoff, type of operation (eg.. touch and goes - which recommend the landing gear to remain down) and finally, if the cooling fans were operative or not. The minimum time I can see with fans on is 15mins for a normal landing. This quadruples to 60mins if for any reason any of the fans were not operational. ;-) Chart G4 gives times of between 40mins (fans opperative) to 170mins (fans inop) again, depending on operation.

Btw.. it also states quote: Note: An acceptable method of inspection is given in the maintenance manual published by Hawker Siddeley Aviation Ltd. I wonder if that's 'hang onto it for a minimum of 'X' seconds and if you can't, it's too hot'?? :think: :lol:
