visit to London (Heathrow)

Just spent a weekend at my mother's house. The "attraction" is that she lives 4 miles from Heathrow just about at the outer marker between runways 28L and 28R.

Surprised how few aircraft types are represented now - just about all the short-haul traffic is Airbus (the exceptions are SAS and Lufthansa) and the long haul is all A330, A340, A380, B767, B777, B747.

Quite a few airlines that I had not seen before (Kingfisher, ANA, Etihad, etc).

Anyway, going through the photos I came across this one with two aircraft in it! What was the little friend doing in the approach region - it did not follow the A320 in for landing.

And coincidence or not, the active runways were changed 5 minutes later to 09L/09R.

Definately an Islander Garry... unusual in those parts I'd have thought.

I agree about the type as an Islander. I wasn't listening to airband at the time and hadn't noticed the Islander until reviewing the photos.

Survey would seem a reasonable suggestion and hence deliberately in that location.

Yes guys....thats the islander from Northolt...I live 2 miles from there and see it all the time....it checks carbon emissions and heat loss from buildings in London.... ;-)

The pilots are a tad frisky flying it....seen it spiral from height many times landing at Northolt...

Why are the RAF doing 'green' work? Or is it just another case of big brother checking up on us.

Out of interest, I think the MET (Police) have an Islander/Defender. They and GMP are the only forces to have a fixed wing capability.

That would have been my guess if Tony had'nt confirmed the answer. :)

It flies up north to do the same also.

Men with big beards are also what it looks for.

(Cough cough I know the pilot, cough) Ahem :-#
