Hi all

another question............

i have got a copy of ABACUS carrier strike force for FS9, i have it purely for the carriers, as i like useing illustrious for my harrier and helo ops,
what i want to know is this.....

is it possible to disasemble the game as it were to be able to use say illustrious in some thing like EX scenery?
i know a guy did this to be able to use it in FSX but i cannot get ahold of him to find out how he did it!

do any of you guru's on here have any ideas you might share!!!

I'm not too sure that Abacus would be thrilled to know you want to disassemble their software mate.. even in the confines of your own dwelling and being the legal owner of 'said' software What is it you want to do exactly and is it in FSX or FS9?? I take it you want to pull Illustrious and plonk it wherever you wish rather than have it where Carrier Strike Force has it If that is the case.. is there not an Illustrious already available as a standalone scenery item or at least, an Invincible class carrier?? I'm sure I have one somewhere and I don't, to the best of my knowledge have Carrier Strike Force

Small nit-picky point: You do not 'own' most software you purchase - you are purchasing a license to use it.

So what happens when the license owner goes out of business?

Is using parts of a purchased programme in this way essentially any different to buying a Ford Escort and breaking it up and fitting some of the parts to a car your making using an old Mini??

The difference is one is hardware, whereas the other is software, once they have your money hardware manufacturers don't really mind what you do with their product, it's not as if you can clone it and sell it on. On the other hand with software the cost of doing so is effectively zero so they're more restrictive on what they let you do, actually read the End User License Agreement to see what the company concerned allows, they do vary for instance Autodesk won't even let you sell the license on to someone else when you've finished with it!
Of course if it's for personal use only it really doesn't matter as they'll never find out...
Oh and the whole EULA thing is quite contentious with various legal suits by Autodesk to protect their rights for starters, can't remember the current state of play with regards to that but it came down to someone buying some copies of Max at a liquidation sale and selling them on for big bucks, Autodesk claimed this was a transfer of the original license which was against the terms of the EULA. Think it's still ongoing..

Simon Swallow did a freeware Portsmouth Task Force scenery including HMS Invincible for FS2004, and has released HMS Invincible for FSX, compatible with AICarriers.

That is a very good question. I imagine if the business is sold, the new owner holds the rights to enforce the license. If the business just disapears, I have no idea.

One point of controversy is with shrink-wrap software where the purchaser has no chance of reading the license terms before purchase. Some have contended that this invalidates the owners right to enforce the license because the terms of said license were not openly disclosed. I suppose the purchaser could return the software if he does not accept the license terms, but most stores will not accept a return where the shrink-wrap has been opened.

Funny thing with software

The very old PC years ago and the two I bought in the FS9 times have a windows disk and I have had to rleoad more than once.

My mothers laptop didn't come with any discs....(mine had all the programme discs)..but a variety of software like Office already loaded which you have to pay to activate.

There was no windows disk either it was a licence bundled with the machine to have windows loaded once on the system.

I guess all this is to stop the discs being used on other machines.

Strange though if the license if transfered to any new owners of the product right as when shops or software buisnesses go out of buisiness the warenty becomes void.

Locally I hit this problem

My old PC I had bought had a four year warrenty on the mother board. There was a failure after two years but the business had been sold to new owners. They would not touch it as they had not sold it. The original owners set up another shop and all the staff and owner were the same team I had originally bought it from. They would not touch it as they no longer owned THAT shop I bought it from.

So the shop was still there the people were still in business but I had to pay £115 for a new motherboad,

Either the goodwill goes with the business or not but it seems the goalposts are moved to suit.
