Who remembers ration books?

I treated myself to a leisurely morning with coffee in bed and a surf through the freeview channels on my laptop. I stumbled across the most delightful series of programmes on the Yesterday channel. They're called 'Wartime Kitchen and Garden' and they are the gentlest and most relaxing programmes since Phil Drabble did 'One Man and His Dog'!

They've recreated a 1940s garden and kitchen and an elderly couple show how to grow and cook what was available, all interspersed with memorabilia and TV clips of the time. I was born in 1946 and this is exactly the life I remember living in my early years. It's quite quite wonderful (for me, anyway!). There are wonderful recipes like leek and suet pudding and did you know that you could make a banana sandwich using mashed parsnips flavoured with banana essence?

And did you know that if you kept chickens you had to trade your egg rations for chicken feed?

I'm recording four half-hour programmes on Sky+ and I'll make a 2 hour DVD. If anyone would like a copy, drop me a PM.

Ian :)

Thanks for the post and liink Ian. I was born in 1947 (London) and well remember my mother talking about the rationing which I think did not end until 1954.
