Classic British Flight Sim

After a nine year wait, the US is finally going to conform to International phraseology , changing ""position and hold" to "Line up and wait" for takeoffs. Looks like the FAA moves at a snail's pace.

I have Editvoicepak so I have had that change in FS implemented for years.

It's always been "Line up hold" here...never heard them say "wait"

Agree Garry, hold is much more easier to understand, after all, who obeys the wifes' call to 'wait'!!

'Fraid not, Garry - it's been "line up and wait" under both ICAO and UK rules for almost 30 years although the "wait" is optional. We did use "line up and hold" when I was nought but a boy - I checked a 1973 edition of the Manual of Air Traffic services (MATS) Part 1 and it does, indeed have "line up and hold". I've just phoned an old friend who was once the editor of MATS Part 1 and he remembers it changing to "line up and wait" in 1982 along with many other changes to Aerodrome Control phraseology and procedures introduced by ICAO in the wake of the Teneriffe disaster of 1977.

Shows how long since I listened to Airband...back in the 'eighties I guess

What I don't understand is why, from all the original NTSB recommendations for phraseology changes, the FAA seems to have locked on to that particular one. If they were going to change from their current use of, say, "affirmative" for "yes" to the much safer ICAO "affirm" I could understand it but I don't see why "line up (and wait)" is inherently any safer than "(taxi into) position and hold". Very strange.
