Just a heads up...Tonight on BBC2...Featuring the Great Rift Valley.

Since it was 208 Squadrons low flying area in my time there, I'm hoping to see some of my favourite spots

This thread from here might remind you:-

Oh good. I hadn't noticed that, Peter. Yes I remember your posts very well about the Rift Valley. I love everything to do with Africa so I'll be either watching or recording the program. I note that it's part one of three so I've set Sky + to record all three. Nairobi was one of our most frequent stopovers in the 70s and 80s and I was able to get around Kenya a bit before it got too dangerous.

Mind if I hijack your thread briefly as it's about Africa? I spent a great deal of time in South Africa in the 90s and I've just finished scanning some of my best wildlife prints (pre the digital age!) and posted them on my website just yesterday. In case anybody's interested in that sort of thing, here's a shortcut: Ian's wildlife photos

Thanks, Peter.

Ian :)

That was an excellent programme, Peter. I'd have missed it if you hadn't mentioned it. Did you see much that you were familiar with? Kilmanjaro, obviously!

I had visited three of the areas. Amboseli/Kilimanjaro, The Aberdares and the Ethiopian Highlands. We used to fly VC10s into Addis Ababa in the 70s with a stopover. From the cabin crew seats in a VC10 you don't get to see the view, but one day we were empty so I sat in the cabin and looked out of the window on take-off. I wasn't prepared for the runway to end at the top of a thousands-of-feet high vertical cliff face and to suddenly find myself hanging in mid-air seemingly stationary! I can still remember the shock now. So it was interesting to see that scenery again in the TV film.

Ian :)

Yes Ian,

I really enjoyed it and saw a lot of familiar territory...Suswa was very interesting...I led a section of four Venoms in Low Level Battle formation round that circular valley in the crater...We were all below the top of that central plateau  ...I also visited Ol Donja Lengai a number of times in both Venoms and Hunters and could smell the sulphur. I also spotted Ol Longonot in the distance and I hope they show us some closer shots there. I also hope they go to "Hell's Gate".

Up in Ethiopia, the volcano with the permanent lake of molten red hot rock in the crater was very impressive...I would love to see that.
