Hi all
i have 2 FSDS questions..
1 i am trying to make small scenery objects for fs9, can you..and if so how....im trying to make a vehicle that pretty much has a box body,
but when i add a box for example it only gives me the 4 corner points to manipulate.... unlike a tube for example that has loads.. is there a way to add sections etc to the box!
2 when i set up my background in the rear veiw its asks for a distance... which way do i measure... up or across...?
hope you can help
i have completed all the lessons and scoured the web for tutorials..but im stuck
cheers
Neil

Hi Neil
Use a tube mate it's easier (tick the Z box for which way you want it arranged and remember the front of the car it to the right )my first HS748 was backwards initially!
you can select how many points from 3 to 128! for how round you want it in section (for low poly cars i use 6 or 8 points for it's roundness)
then you can select how many cross sections (as long as you don't delete any points or polys you can add/remove cross sections as you go)
don't bother closing the ends on the starting tube as they will jumpo all over the shop as you add and remove cross sections.
the distance depends which way you want to measure
i usually stick a copy of the scale diagram on the drawings on each of the 3 views then if it's a 10 ft scale bar is stick 10 in the distance box
then click accurately on the image at the 0 point then again at the 10 point and the scale box (pixels i think) will fill with numbers

Rick

Just added answer to second question
example of a Morris Marina I made for Toby's Southampton years ago
was just a tube with about 24 sides
looked fine in scenery as you don't need many polys for that

Hi Neil
To be honest i would have used far less polys if i made it the longways tube
the Marina i built sideways for some odd reason
But it looked ok
Also did a Capri and Mk1 & Mk2 Cortina even a 120Y
If you need any of them just shout
they are low poly just for scenery as i could only find modern stuff at the time

Hi Neil
The problem with FSDS and most 3d packages is everyone dives straight in and tries to make a complex model
if you dive in and make simple shapes it's far easier
I think the first things i made where a Bucket & a Ladder just to get used to what each button did and how to move the bits to where you want them
just take it nice and slow and you will be fine
the cars i show are very very basic (it's the textures traight off the 1975 Ford Brocure that do the magic even though they are low quality images)
for scenery it looks fine as you never get near enough to see the details.
think i made these for Toby in 2005 when i was still very much a learner (still learning now after 10 years of FSDS)
also when you want to make a teture fit properly just take screenshots in FSDS of the wireframe of each part then it's easyer (I use the Paint Shop Pro Screenshot gadget)
still do everything in s free version PSP5 i think (I only use Photoshop for Bump maps and spinning props as PSP 5 has no radial blur tool)

After taking on board what you said Rick, this is what i have come up with sofar!!!
all i need to do is suss out how to close the ends of the vehicle..lol
and paint the wheels individually i guess!!

Hi Neil
Looks as good as my cars
if each wheel is seperate
select the points on the outside face of the wheel
set the constrain "X" Button and sclae the points slightly smaller from the side.
then when you texture side onwards it will also do the tread area
basically the texture does not touch them currently as they are shaded from the direction you applied the texture
(they are currently at 90 degrees so texture misses the surface)
if you make the outside of the wheel slightly smaller diameter than the inside the texture should hit the sides which on scenery is good enough
Practice makes perfect

Rick
