Some of you will be aware of the ongoing delay to the reopening of the former RAF Llanbedr for commercial use here on the west coast of Wales, which has Welsh Assembly Government, Local Council and virtually unanimous local support but which is being obstructed by perverse (and I speak as a retired Chartered Town Planner) planning rulings by the Snowdonia National Park, influenced and whipped up by the moronic largely English townies from the Snowdonia Society. Although there seems to have been some movement forward at a recent public meeting convened by local MP Elfyn Llwyd which was packed out with largely supportive locals, which seems to have galvanised the National Park into realising they have to find a way forward, we still need to apply every bit of public support for this project which will potentially bring desperately needed proper jobs to the area, and reuse an existing only relatively recently mothballed site for beneficial economic activity without any further encroachment into the National Park. To this end a new Facebook site has been created, so if you have a Facebook account, why not join the group to show your support for the project and keep in touch? Already in a few months it has outstripped the number of people who signed an e-petition against the proposal started by the Snowdumbia Society two years ago, so it's certainly got a momentum.

The link is http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=319029487127 You will need a Facebook account to access it though. There's just over 950 supporters at present, which wipes the floor with the 200 or so signatories of the e-petition against the airfield.

As an ex RAF person, I hate to see airfields lying dormant. However, a few questions spring to mind.

What "commercial use" would it be put to? Airlines? Flying Club? Trading Estate?

It's in a fairly isolated position, so who would use it? Maybe the Moronic English Townies that you refer to?

The transport infrastucture leaves much to be desired. How would prospective passengers get there?

Who pays for all the work that will need to be done? The Welsh Assembly? The British Government?

Having spent the necessary millions, will it become a White Elephant?

If it happens, it would of course ease unemployment in the area, and that's to be applauded. But what happens if the bubble bursts?

I can understand people who have purchased property in the area since the airfield closed, getting annoyed. It's different if they purchase in the area of an active airfield, because they should have expected it to be noisy.

I'd just like to say, that my name is Dennis William Williams. My father was Evan Owen Williams, who came from Rhostryfan, on the other side of Snowdon to Llanbedr. I still have relatives living there. So you can see, I'm not having a dig at Wales. I wasn't born there, but I consider it to be my spiritual homeland.

I wish you luck.

D.

Well said there Dennis ;)

You can almost spit to Mona, Valley and Caernarfon from Llanbedr and while we all hate to see airfields go under.. is it really commercially viable *-)

Good luck with it anyway :)
