Well, no problem for BA's 747 crews...

I always loved to hear the commander say "we're back in business".
All the best,
Nick

All UK controlled airspace closed until further notice. VFR flight permitted up to FL 195 but inadvisable - having recently been only 45 miles from a serious eruption ( Montserrat 11.2.2010 ) I can say that the advice would probably be good if we were nearer, but at lat 53N there is no sign of ash at low levels, and no visible sign at high levels . If I had very expensive engines to protect, however, I would probably take a different view!

Probably a stupid question but what about the RAF, are they all grounded too?
Nigel.

I think the problem is it's on it's way, the winds are swinging round to a north-westerly and certainly the skies here on the Welsh coast have become milkier over the past few hours which would seem to suggest the high-level dust is starting to reach us.
Certainly unprecedented, but given what has happened in the past with flame-outs probably a wise precaution until they know for certain if the eruption will pose a serious threat to aerial activity. It's also affecting Scandinavia and it looks like the Dutch are going to close their airspace, so I don't think it's a case of Brittle Brits over reacting.

Brize traffic is affected, understandably, as they fly airways.
