Canberra Smoke
Can anyone tell me if the RR Avon's used by the Canberra's produced a lot of smoke? What type/degree of smoke effects would be appropriate?

Re: Canberra Smoke
The cartridges used to start both the Canberra and the American B-57 engines produced prodigious amounts of smoke on starting but I cannot recall seeing smoke trails from each engine RAF or US during normal flying.

Re: Canberra Smoke
Seems to me the Comet was fairly "clean" as far as second generation jets went --- far less than say the old water wagon 707-100s

Re: Canberra Smoke
As far as I know.no Brits ever smoked like the Americans.
A Comet smoke was closer to a herk

Re: Canberra Smoke
Not even a VC10 comes close to the early 707
Perhaps a little light smoke from a Canberra when under load (takeoff roll giving it large) but other than that.. not much to speak of

Re: Canberra Smoke
I've only ever seen a Camberra on T/O power once and I don't recall any noticable smoke which if it had done so I would have remembered it as such things are impressive

Re: Canberra Smoke
Yes indeed.. nowt like a bit of smoke to raise the spirit
My take on this question is that most if not all jets of that age were a bit smokey to varying degrees whether it be a Spey on a 1-11 or an Avon on a Canberra. Notable 'dirty' little girls must be the Conways on a VC10 though again, only when under load and very much to varying degrees. As an outsider looking in, you can stand at either end of the runway at Brize all day watching 10's do their stuff and some smoke more than others. Of course, as an outsider looking in.. there's no way of telling if the takeoff was 100% throttle or something less.. one can only guess
Avons didn't smoke anywhere near as much as Conways or Speys but I'm still convinced a little under load would be the norm.. call it a mild distrubance if you will

Re: Canberra Smoke
The smoke on the start up is the cartridge rather than the engine so not a fair comparisonm
As to Speys
I went to Jersey in the lat '70's before BA pulled most of their routes and the weather was still. The continous take offs by One-Elevens left a non dispersing blackish cloud at the engine where the powering up jets kept topping up the cloud
Those were the days
