Well done Spain,thoroughly deserved winners. European Champions 2008 and now World Champions 2010. Seems hard to believe that they lost their opening group fixture to the Swiss. Roll on Brazil 2014....

That, unfortunately, was the story of Holland's progress through the tournament. Going down to 10 men (or less) was somehow an inevitability and you cannot afford to play with 10 against a team like Spain. Well done to them for reaching the finals but in the cool light of day, did they really think they were going to succeed by constantly fouling the opposition?? Few here would want a team with a player called 'Alonso' playing for them to win anything but on the strength of the Netherlands conduct thus far, they didn't deserve to win. Well done to the English ref for putting a stop to their shenanigans

I was neural at first, happy that whoever won it would be someone that had never won before. After all the yellow cards, I started to root for Spain and I am glad they won.

According to the news here, the bars were packed and the entire World Cup has been very good for business. Whether that enthusiasm for football (soccer) lasts into the future is any one's guess because the Colonials generally like lots of scoring and that certainbly was not the case for most of the matches. The subtlety of a good defensive struggle is lost on the natives here. I have always joked that if they counted each goal as 7 points and had cheerleaders in short skirts, they would attract far more attention in the Colonies.
