Best way to re-install FSX?

I am faced with the daunting prospect of a clean re-install of FSX and Acceleration (plus REX) and tons of payware aircraft....AAGGHH!
In the past, I have copied all manufacturer's folders, guages, aircraft, modules, effects and some scenery into a holding folder. Re-installed FSX clean and then added the contents of the saved folders afterwards. Is this the best way of keeping most of the stuff?
Should I un-install FSX via the control panel? Although I assume it will clear the registry, that might take a few hidden things too!
I get crashes at 70% of airfields (on loading and whilst flying) after un-instaling stuff via control panel, I suspect a scenery (probably Aerosoft) has taken a chunk of FSX with it, when it went.

Trev, what OS are you running, if its 7 or Vista you'll need the "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX" too.
I'd do a clean uninstll mate and rename any folders for FSX that are left behind. If you can afford to spend some cash at the moment, i would very strongly recommend buying a separate hard disk for FSX.

You could always try and repair the FSX installation with the FSX disc 1.
But be warned, I tried this and it stuffed my FSX setup when I used this.

Hi Folks
Trev -
Ensure you test using an MS default a/c.
To differentiate between -
- an Addon Scenery issue
- a default FSX Scenery issue
Make a backup of your active scenery.cfg
located in ALL USERS profile folder -
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX\
Microsoft supplies a clean scenery.cfg for repair purposes.
Its in your FSX root folder -
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\
N.B.
Horizon numpties incorrectly replicated their data into there.
Ensure you edit and remove their entries first.
Copy that clean scenery.cfg into your ALL USERS profile folder -
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX\
Launch FSX
Does it now allow you to load a flight ?
If YES -
Starting with your
least recent addon-scenery
one by one,
insert your addon-sceneries into the scenery.cfg
test fly on each,
repeat till FSX stops fails to load.
If NO -
Repair or reinstall FSX.

Thanks Paul, I am 99% certain that things were removed by an overactive scenery un-install I did last week. On those few airfields that load, I have no auto-gen. The scenery files for the autogen lives in another HD (with Horizon Gen-X) so the lack of trees may indicate they have been removed with the scenery itself. The sim crashes with default scenery too, so I suspect it is not an add-on problem. I will try what you suggest though, all the same.

Replace it with FS9.
I'll get my coat.
