The old question of carrier ops in FS2004

Afternoon all, I was wondering if anyone has any tips regards getting some sort of carrier ops success in FS2004. I'm aware of the FSX based solution using Acceleration version but can't afford to replace the my plain FSX quite at the moment (Its in the to do list sometime in the new year though :agree: ) .

I'm particularly interested in anything pre fast jets, such as 1st and second world war ops here. I was delighted to find the ex payware Alphasim Stringbag for FS2004 at the weekend and liked it so much it made me start looking into what I could do with FS2004 re carriers. I've more or less managed to master getting it to hit the deck at the right place on the small merchant ship with a landing deck that comes with the plane, but have to do a bolter or I end up in the drink at the bow (I cant stop on the deck without the wires - lummy). DG's Hermes with her Ski jump just off the IOW works OK, the deck's long enough and the ski jump is handy way of stooping you on the deck without the wires. It gives an interesting way of throwing a Stringbag back into the air as well  but she's a bit modern really. 8)

I'm now on the lookout for some suitable carriers to use and how to get them to trap and launch the aircraft if required. I found the 3wire app thing on Avsim but I'm having some small issues getting it to work the way I want. Anyone had any luck with this or is there any other way of doing it.

I'm aware I may be flogging a dead horse here because FSX is probably the way to go, but I do like a challenge now and then :cpu:

Thanks in advance for the advice folks,

Have a look for the FB11 Hawker Sea Fury, it comes with HMS Ocean and HMS Glory, reading the text file you need to download HMS Arromanches elsewhere.

SFREL1.ZIP, SFRE1U.ZIP and fs2004_seafury_upgrade_v2301.zip

That might work, I'm not sure about early cat operations on them though and how they are modeled. But it's something :)

Hi Gordon :hello:

Not sure what to suggest for the best regarding 2004. There were a few carriers available (landable) and these (I'm sure) had 3-wire settings published. I only ever found 2 freeware carriers I really liked.. the FS9 version of Ark Royal IV and Clemenceau, both of which I still have installed :) These are a bit late for what you want though *-) As for 3-wire.. I have it but tended to use arrcab which eventually became payware and part of FlightDeck3. It works just like 3-wire and may still be floating around in freeware form.

http://www.fs-shipyards.org is a good start for any form of FS shipping :) Ark Royal IV comes with 4 static positions.. English Channel, Norway, off Gibraltar and somewhere in the U.S. (Mayport.. just checked) with alternatives clean deck and populated. Clemenceau sits off NW France :cpu: The best WWII carrier (IMHO) is the FSX only Flying Stations Victorious.. pity it's FSX only :(

Tks for that Darren :)

Here's the website link for the Arromanches Aicraft carrier model - http://joel.maillot.free.fr/fs2k2_Porte_avions1.html

There's Charles de Gaulle on there as well.

:)

Gordon,

I found the simplest way is to use Rob Barendregt's freeware Carrier Ops upgrade which places the catapult and arrest sequence controls in the aircraft rather than the carrier. You can add the gauges etc. to any aircraft and for the catapult launch you can vary the launch forces and final launch speed; reduced for prop aircraft and increased for jets. The HUD that comes in the package maps the required gear, tailhook and flaps down with red/green lights and also displays a "meatball" ILS if the carrier AFCAD is ILS enabled.

You can land on any carrier that has a "hard" deck as well as enabling practising on land runways. The catapult and arrest sequences are quite realistic and with sounds - you can almost feel the G forces !

fs9 file is rbco-20.zip
fsx file is rbco-30.zip

Both available at Flightsim.com

The Ark Royal sceneries are good and I found a set of american carrier sceneries somewhere and these have bigger flight decks !

As an aside, I have ideas for creating AI carrier aircraft in fs9 but just haven't got round to trying them out yet...

Thanks all much appreciated.

I did get the Sea Fury, many moons ago, forgot it came with some ships as well :$ I do have the Ark Royal IV as well Dave, thanks and also have Steve & co's excelent FSX Stringbag and HMS Victorious, but need to upgrade FSX to get them to work right.

I'll have a closer look at how to get 3wire working if I can and have a look at FS-Shipyards if I get a chance tonight.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you all, Its a wee bit cald up here... tends to slow things down, including the old grey matter. :help:

Try hunting for the R Neth Navy "Karel Doorman". An excellent straight deck for FS9 with working animated deck crew figures and landing mirror plus arrester wires. You can make an excellent working catapult/arrester wire setup using Rob B's gauge. I have frequently flown RP's Sea Hawk, Alpha Sea Venom and a Tracker from and onto this deck.
