Hi All,

I see on Sub Sim Navy news that the carrier has been sold for scrap to the Turkish firm Leyal Ship Recycling for £2,000,000 after they won the bid on the online auction from the MOD's Disposal Services Authority,

No Comment as words fail me! :-#

Cheers,

Roger.

Well for the last 5 years it's been nothing but an empty shell stripped for spares for Lusty and the Ark and was never going to be re-used. £2million is better than letting it slowly rust away further or sinking it as an artificial reef.

Pity they could go for the best priced UK breaker :(

There is probably some materials in the hull that mean it can't be broken in the UK, usual H&S EU meddling no doubt.

Actually I don't believe thats true DarrenL.
The french Clemenceau was so bad in that regard that not even the Indians would take it. Guess where it was broken up? Here (in a old fashioned sort of way I find that quite satisfying to tell the truth :hide: ) in a yard that was fully qualified to rip out its asbestos and lead paint. So it isn't as if we couldn't do it in this country...

Its very sad either way to see such a good ship go, however much of a state she's in after being canabalised for the other two.

Well, I'm pedantic for accuracy ;)

Whatever it is, it isn't an EU or HS issue (for once)
