Need some info from another BT Business Broadband user

Post by Rick Piper »

Hi Guys

If any of you are a BT Business Broadband user can you please let me know as much as possible on your Router settings for the BT connection ?

Been struggling for 10 days with 153 kbps max down speed and BT have closed my Fault report.

Disgusted with their total lack of help or interest.

I just need to know what router settings i should have as the BT auto setup on my router doesn't work properly (it sets things very oddly)
Regards
Rick

Rick,

What router is it you have now and I'll try and get the setting for you. I know you told me the other week, but I've forgotten

Hi Ben

TP-LINK TD-W8901G

BT said they don't reccomend this one (funny as i bought it from the BT shop online!)

I know the basic settings but trying to check the miriad of other settings.
I get online fine but 288 kbps is locked and BT just keep saying it will get better in a few days (12 days and still 288!)

no problems until they did an upgrade at my exchange (Kesgrave) to ADSL2+ (worked fine for years till then!)

Can't do my work stuff as the connection is too slow to grab my files off the work's sever in Bournemouth.
Lost a weeks working time so far and BT don't give a S***.

is there anything in the settings that can lock my speed this low ?

Regards
Rick

Hi Rick,

My local exchange is changing to ADSL 2+ shortly and Demon have recommended that the router transmission mode should be set to g.992.5 Annex A.

Apparently some routers call this mode "ADSL 2+ annex" or "ADSL 2+ auto"

Hi Rick,

The BT shop is Dabs in principle... I dont have BT business but lack of speed can be a few things such as noise on the line (Casued by extensions or faulty/poor wiring or just the normal noise) but could also be the "negotiation" between the modem and the exchange...

This works in a way of overlocking your PC for say, the modem will increase the settings which to a point will become unreliable then drop it back down to a reliable setting...

What i would surgest you try first, is borrow a netgear DG384 modem router and see if this gets a better speed. The second is filters, you might have to purchase professional which the cheepo ones seem to cause problems due to internal wiring. The third is move ISP or threaten to due to this (even look at entitlement to refund due to services not provided etc)... If you end up moving and you speed doesnt increase then your line is the issue...

Sorry its not much help in relation to your Q but it might help...

With your post with your settings you wont be able to change to g.992.5 Annex A due to it being a low cost router, even netgear i dont think you could... However my router i recently got does have this option but its £112 a go! Also on your screen grabs you have quite a high line attenuation at 46 db...

Hi Chris

Happy Birthday by the way :$ just seen thread

My line attenuation has been same for 4 years (had 2.9 mbps till they upgraded exchange equipment to ADSL2+)
it's 50 to 52 if it's raining and bt say that is fine !

I have no extentions etc and Router is plugged directly into BT Master socket.
3m lead from router to BT master (in test socket still on master as BT told me to try it)
Using a brand new BT filter too.

Been through all their Flowchart s***e on the "Not! Helpline" and they keep closing my fault report even though nothing has changed.
If i don't get working soon i will be sacked :(

Tried to ask the Guy at the Kesgrave exchange (1.2 km from me and 3 km from BT HQ!) for advice and was told to "Foxtrot Oscar your tresspassing" (wanted to smack him but sadly MRS was in the Car so had to pretend to be an upstanding non violent type)

Thanks Rick,

anyway, sounds like a dead end, i would move ISP if your possible to do so... We as a company use ZEN http://www.zen.co.uk/ which are very reliable...

As youve done what i would do and what their scripts ask, I would lodge an official complaint with them and ask for the money back for the time its been at 288, and all the phone calls etc!

Rick,

Those settings are ADSL not 2+. It looks like the Router is syncing at the legacy ADSL rather than the new.... give me half an hour...
