Vanguard Merchantman G-APEP landing at Brooklands

Post by DaveB »

Hi Chaps..

This bit of film has just been released on Youtube, I presume in memory of the recently late Captain Peter Moore showing Superbs final landing ;)

Very nice, even though it touched down a little eagerly it looks like it could pull up as sharp as a Hercules.

Ps, they did close the road, didn't they?

Nice find Dave.

Must have been a lot going on in the cockpit prior to landing for the final time.

SUPERB!! :welldone: (as in EP's name!)

I've been dying to see it too, Cheers Dave! What an amazingly short landing and great sound. Can't believe it touched down so early :-O :worried:

In the "wheel tracks" scene, I can't make out if the view is looking towards brooklands or t'other way?

Right, just watched it again, it must be looking towards the approach path (away fom Brookie) otherwise it would have crossed the road and there are probably kerb stones either side....ooh-err!

Yes.. a bit rough and ready isn't it but well within the Vanguards capability ;) I agree.. some shots in that vid are deceptive and show the original runway beyond the road 'Wellington Way' which cuts through the runway at it's southern end ( the end with the cut in the banking ). Superb touched down on the wrong side of the road and looking at it.. lifted over the road on decompression of the main gear.. that or just soaked up the bumps. :) The full length runway wasn't particularly long at Brooklands (3000ft +/-) and losing over a quarter of it (truncated by the road) must have made the remainder look very small indeed.. hence their desire to get down :)
