Geocaching

A workman in our home today spoke to us at length about his hobby of 'geocaching'. Has anyone any experience of this activity and which GPS unit and other kit can be recommended? I see that the base maps supplied with hand held Garmin GPS are reputed to be lousy and a website ''talkytoaster' is recommended for free UK maps.

I was astonished at how many caches there were near my home, the nearest just 50 yds away.

Any anecdotes or recommended UK websites would be appreciated.

I have an iPhone and there are geocache apps for it. Including a free limited one. Uses GPS on the phone and you get the usual screen info. Never tried it though.

Yes, I tried it last summer whilst out for a walk with my son & grandson. He (son) had an application on his all-singing 'phone' .
It was great fun, dashing around the woods finally finding a small sandwich box under a bush with a selection of small toys. notepad etc inside. :|
All I can say is that it brought some purpose to an otherwise ordinary walk.
Cheers
