Professor Richard Holmes RIP

A huge loss to everyone in Britain interested in our military history. His television documentaries, visiting old battlefields such as Waterloo, Mons , the Somme, Dunkirk and Arnhem, brought that history to life. Books such as 'Tommy', his examination of the British soldier on the Western Front, and Acts of War, which deals with how men behave in battle, are amongst the best I've ever read.

What a terrible loss. Rest in peace.

What a great loss, I loved the 'Brigadier' (his TA rank) on TV and had no idea of his passing until seeing this post! I have many of his books and will treasure them even more now.

A great shame and sad lost to us all :(

He always put a sense of reality into his reporting, the true on the ground history as you would have seen it had you been there.

My condolences to his loved ones and friends

A sad loss indeed.

I've always enjoyed his programmes but I'm ashamed to say that I wasn't aware of his TA rank and expertice...which explains the wealth of information and feeling that he brought to military history.

RIP
