A few times today young Starlings have been throwing themselves against the window of my study and each time I've had a look out to see if they have damaged themselves but look what I spotted the last time!

It's the ghost of one of the window collision victims

It's apparently quite rare in starlings (but, bizarrely, less rare among blackbirds) - but I guess the rarity is fairly easy to explain, they must be easier to spot by predators and the first to be picked off from the flock.

That's lovely! (as is Kate Humble

) What a great catch. We had a white black bird here a few years ago, but despite getting thousands of starlings here (which is amazing to watch!) I have never seen a white one!
