Unexploded 4000lb cookie found in Koblenz

What is frightening is that its right next to the river bank in a built-up area. There is another, smaller, American bomb nearby. ( See ? Not everything is bigger in the USA ;) )

From what I've been reading, the current low level of the Rhine is revealing all sorts of things and causing major problems for river traffic.

Oo-er missus :-O

I'm surprised it's remained intact after all these years. From 18months experience on a minehunter, our bombs tended to be pretty much inert after such a long period.. not so the German ones which one would presume were made of a higher grade steel! Fingers crossed they disarm it ok ;)

Not related, but:
Isn't there a ship sunk of our coast somewhere that has a few kilotons of ordnance in it that they reckon would flood Holland if it all went up?

It's the second time I've heard of this wreck in a week.

Where are they going to put the runway for the proposed Thames estuary airport?
Between the highly explosive sunken ammunition ship and the even more highly explosive Grain island liquified natural gas storage facility.
