Vanguard Query

I notice that the procedure states that the air supply switches should be set to decrease before take off then returned to auto during the climb.Just wondered what the reason was for this.

Hi Eric
It's a procedural check to test the system is reset.. it varies slightly on the Merchantmen.
Looking at the FM, the real lady is a little more complex (thank goodness Fraser didn't model it all!

) and the switch positions (or switch sequence) can be either/or depending on what indications they give initially from start up to high ground beta/taxying. I can give you the full do-dars here but suffice to say, it is proceedurally correct for the air supply switches to be set to decrease first (until the indicators show full decrease) then the UPFV is selected open. You then set the altitude of the departure airfield on the control dial. At high ground beta or during taxi, the supply switches are then set to AUTO followed by the UPFV to shut (checking that it shows shut). If it doesn't, another set of rules come into play so assume it will

Just before takeoff, they're selected to DECREASE again otherwise there's a performance penalty when you open the go levers. After takeoff, they're set to AUTO again and that's where they stay. Before descent, you set the destination QNH on the control dial and the system should bring you safely down without burst ear drums
Are you glad you asked?

Thanks for that Dave.I was just preparing for a cargo flight from Cardiff to Edinburgh when that query came to mind. From your description it is good job that the complete procedure hasn't been simulated(assuming it is possible).it serves as a reminder that the real thing is rather more involved!

Im thinking of getting the Vangaurd ever since I saw it at Brooklands. I just like to ask if the package includes the panel and sounds.

Hello Tom
The panel for the VC9 pack is based on APEP at Brooklands and is very close to the real thing. Frasers soundset is also quite superb (no pun intended) and sounds very much like the real thing. What more can I say

The model we use is Rick Piper's original dating from FS2002 but don't be put off by that. While it may be lacking in certain technical advances made available since then (for FS), it is still very much up to the task in FS9 and will work in FSX too with the usual caveats
Eric..
Yes, the real lady was rather more complex to operate but like everything, became routine

The AirCon procedure basically makes sure the system is empty and working so it can be run up with confidence. As the units were engine driven (off no.2 and no.3 giving the Vanguard it's distinctive sound) this is where the pwr tradeoff could occur on takeoff so they'd be made ready and switched to AUTO when you throttled back after takeoff. The Merchantman had one less unit (excepting APET and APES which were retrofitted to carry bloodstock) so the procedure was truncated
