They've made a wonderful job of it. I can see the Icon being left in the hangar for a bit. So does this now mean that they've thrown in some navaids and ILS beams for you? Oh - and is there a float version? Does it fly as good as it looks?

Sorry, lots of questions but Flight is starting to look like a serious simulator, now!

Hi Ian,

If you look at the last but one picture...close up of main instruments, you will see the localiser needle is displaced. I had just done a LOC/DME approach to Sitka (there is no glidepath here but will check when I get an airport with full ILS). There are lots of navaids around Alaska. You just have to tick the box on the MAP to make them all show. Then if you hover your mouse pointer over one of them on the MAP, it will play the Ident. Also the nav box on the Cub has a button to click to hear the ident of the NavAid that you have tuned...There are many VORs and NDBs as well. The Icon has no navaids in it so that is map only (just like the Venoms and Hunters that I flew). However, the Carbon Cub, RV6 and Maule have navaids on board.

No, sadly there is no float version of the CC and only two liveries. Yes it does fly extremely well and with dramatic performance. Take-off and landing is very short (especially if like me you accidentally set the parking brake on the approach!). Rate of climb is quick. Ailerons are light and the aircraft will not just fly a course on its own. Loops are great. Rolls are great (the engine cuts near the inverted but roars up again as you come out...not a problem as the rate of roll is faster than the Icon).

One thing about Alaska is that there are hundreds of Seaplane Bases, so I expect to be using the Icon more than the Cub. What I have in mind is flying between airports with the Cub and then while based there for a while, seek out all the local SPBs with the Icon. Then back into the Cub to move base to the next airport

EDIT...forgot to mention that I tried a spin in both directions from 14000 feet...The spin is very stable but the speed sits steady at 69 knots. This leads me to believe that on this aeroplane it is a spiral dive as opposed to a proper spin I will experiment further and see if I can persuade it to remain fully stalled in a "flatter" proper spin. BTW spinning is prohibited anyway.

How did I know that you would have taken that instruction not to spin as a personal challenge? I thought of you at Brooklands the other day when a volunteer was showing me the engine of a Messerschmitt that had been shot down by a Hurricane in the area. It was an inverted V design with the sump at the top. He couldn't understand how the oil circulation could be efficient. I knew the answer immediately. Fighter pilots like to fly inverted whenever possible so it doesn't matter which way they install the engine. Half the time it will be the right way up. You see how much you've taught me about flying

I was under the impression that Flight didn't originally have navaids but I don't know where I got that idea. Perhaps because of the Icon panel. Anyway, every addition to Flight shows a marked improvement and If MS eventually allow some third party add-ons it will be quite stunning.

Well...I've just heard that FLIGHT is withdrawn...I might be the only person that bought the Carbon Cub

Anyway that has really spoilt my enjoyment...i really loved FLIGHT and will miss it intensely

I just fired up FLIGHT and it still works at the moment, but I suppose they will withdraw the service soon

Well it looks like I can continue to use it but I was looking forward to future developements

There is another alternative that you may not have considered, Peter. I'm sure your BA, state and RAF pensions could stretch to a real cabin in the woods near Sitka. And possibly a little carbon cub floatplane moored to the opposite side of the jetty from Nicci's yacht

To hell with Microsoft. As real as it gets! You know you want to.

Thanks, Joe. What a wonderful toy. I would really really like one of those! The owner obviously has trouble making decisions - floats, wheels and tundra tyres! The latter is in the hope that global warming will reverse and tundra will extend into Florida?
