No you are wrong Ian...I was a train spotter in my youth in London (which in those days was called "Smoke"). I lived in North London at Southgate and most of the stuff I saw was LNER...However, I sometimes made a journey by Tube to Manor House where I caught the Tram which journeyed through the Kingsway Tunnel and came out on the Embankment near Cleopatra's Needle...Then I walked across the Hungerford Bridge to Waterloo Station...There you could see those wonderful locomotives that were very different from our lot...Merchant Navy Class, West Country Class and later the Battle of Britain Class. There was something rather special about them and I often made that most interesting journey to see them. Needless to say, I would always be clutching the appropriate Ian Allen book

They were heady days for young boys who liked trains. My brother had the Ian Allan books but we lived in Kent so he only got Southern Region stuff. You were lucky living in the smoke for that reason! That generation have grown up but haven't lost the habit so nearly all the spotters are getting on a bit! Not many new ones as the trains are boring.

I'm at work now, having a break at Pompey. We hit a cow on the way down which damaged the train and caused quite a bit of damage. What's worse is the smell in this heat. I think most of the cow is stuck on the engine under the front carriage. No glamour nowadays
