RIP, a reluctant hero and true legend of our lifetime.

Probably one of the most significant figures in human history. I watched him set foot on the moon, something like 4 in the morning - very blurred, but I just had to make sure I saw it happen. RIP Neil.

How sad.One of the greatest icons of the 20th century.I also recall staying up to watch the landing.This was after driving back in our old AustinA35 from a holiday in Torquay on the Saturday during which we detoured past Fairford on the off chance of seeing Cocorde 02(I think) flying.guess what,we saw it fly accompanied by a Canberra.
I think that when watching Armstrong set foot on the moon I knew that I was seeing history being made.R.I.P Neil.EricT

Very sad news indeed. The moon landings were a bit before my time, but he always seemed a very nice bloke when interviewed and a true legend

For a child of the 60's like me, news that Neil Armstrong has died comes as a real shock and I feel genuinely sad...

One of the calmest, most analytical and then most reclusive of all the Nasa Astronauts. He always thought he was just doing a job, well if that job included being a hero to a 9 year old british boy, then it's a job you did bloody well. Rest in peace Commander Armstrong.

A great loss indeed, I remember being woken as a child, to watch his moon landing (I had asked to watch).
Probably the most momentous achievement in living memory.

Sad that you're gone, Neil. Will we ever see your likes again?

Sad day indeed. Of course, I watched Neil take his first steps on the moon back in 1969. RIP Neil and condolences to your family and friends.

Wow!!

Men of such magnitude seem to always be young heroes. Passage of time comes unnoticed to all.

Hard to think of a bigger 'first'
