Very interesting, it should be good news in a way for at least one family. I don't understand the reference to a DFM ribbon being on a jumper though. As far as I'm aware it wasn't done.

Battle Dress jacket maybe but I would have thought certainly not on a jumper/jersey, did'nt aircrew use the white turtle neck pullie as per RN ??? or am I being my usual dim self ???

Not BD, it mentions 3 woollen RAF jumpers and a tunic pocket.

Re: Missing Lancaster crew identified by W/OP's signet ring
This is such a sad story. It shows just how vulnerable the Lancaster was. It's only real defence against fighters was darkness and even that was compromised by open exhausts. To read about three of them being shot down by one fighter within five minutes in daylight almost brings me to tears. So many skilled, experienced and brave men just trying to do their duty.
Can't think of any words, really.

Yes very sad.I' ve often thought that British bombers were I adequately armed with the Browning .303 machine guns. Not much protection against fighters carrying 20mm canons etc. There would have to been a trade off between bomb load and the weight of the heavier armament but I suspect more crews would have survived and that would have been worth the penalty.EricT
