Nigel's Kai Tak Video

Here we are, lads! This is Nigel H-J's long anticipated video of Kai Tak. He's sent me three videos to upload, two of which are at Kai Tak, so there is more to come.
His notes say that his landings on Rwy 13 were with the wind at 074 degrees and 20 knots. I can barely manage it without any wind but Nigel's mastery of cross-wind landings win means he's usurped my claim to master of Kai Tak
Crank it up to 1080 HD quality and watch 9 minutes of Classic British simming. Nice job, Nigel!

Bloody Hell, Nigel... they were great considering you had no rudder in any of them!

Hi Ben,
many thanks for your kind words but could not have done it without Ian as he very kindly supplied me with thte AI aircraft of that period and also volunteered to upload it to YouTube so a public 'Thank you very much Ian' from me!!
Regarding the turns onto finals I only used the rudders very slightly at some point in the approaches though it may very well be the sensitivity settings I have them in FS9 that do not show them working very well!!

will have to look at that!!

but had to use full rudder on landing as the wind tried to swing the aircraft across the runway after touchdown - the Comet is 'orrible to control after touchdown, really had to stand on the rudder to keep her from parking on the grass!!!
Kind regards
Nigel

Nice vid Nige though I have to agree with Ben about the apparent lack of rudder. Your ground crews wouldn't be too pleased at having to change tyres due to all those flat spots
Kick off drift mate. Crab it in then give it a boot full of rudder to straighted up just before your gear touches down
Had real weather switched on in FSX this afternoon while flying around N Wales. Made for some interesting landings!

Hi Nigel,
He's not a bad sort for a tree hugging lefty is he
It looks like you have Auto rudder ticked in the sim, or maybe you had the yaw dampers on, but there was no rudder whatsoever on the trident / VC10 or comet when you where putting her on the deck, hence my comment
If the rudder is working (i.e. Auto rudder and / or yaw dampers are off) you'll see the rudder swing and the nose come round before the nose gear hits the deck

Thanks Ben, will have to look and see if auto rudder is ticked, from what you have said that may well be the case however, you will see some rudder movement on the 2nd video as the wind drifts the a/c across the runway on turning finals whereas in this video the wind actually helps in the turn.
Dave, always find in FS9 that kicking in the rudder after landing is much easier and also prevents drifting too far over towards the grass and even then, prior to the wheels making contact with the runway, cross control is usually required in order to keep the 'into wind' wing down, just find it easier to crab it in all the way to arrival and blame the co-pilot for the damage to the tyres!!!
Kind regards
Nigel

Oi.. a tree-hugging lefty is probably the 2 most offensive things I could be called so let's have no more of that crap! My concern was with operating cost and aircraft downtime
Nige.. kicking off drift after landing is not kicking off drift and defeats the object. If you want 'easy'.. turn the weather off
Dear me.. what has this place come to

Oh deary me.....Ian.....stand by your letter box.......going to have to send you another recording as his lordship 'ere..... is not what one would call a 'appy bunny especially since Ben called him a
tree-hugging lefty.... but as we all know
IT'S NOT REAL!!!!
Late Edit: LOL, Ben...you mean Dave isn't and Ian is????

I thought for one horrible moment you'd lost your mind my friend. I've had to recall 'the boys'
Nige.. please don't bother with another vid. We're now all fully aware you land your aircraft at 45deg and were perhaps unaware that aircraft had rudders to stop such things happening
TBH.. if you're watching a crosswind landing.. a foot load of rudder deflection is one of the things you look for.. much the same as watching a vid of a car coming up behind a stopped lorry and expecting it to brake. You'd always expect the car to brake as you'd always expect to see the rudder move over.
My apologies for the obvious distress this as caused.. and you not a well man either
