Cuban Missile Crisis: 50 years on.

Here is an interesting article about how those 'in the know' felt, and how they feared the world was in its last moments;
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20068265
We were living at RAF Gaydon at the time, one of the main V-bomber bases, and I can vaguely remember my dad telling me about some great danger that had passed. He seemed very relieved about it, though of course as a six year old, I had no comprehension of what had been going on.
Anybody else have recollections of those days ?

Yeah. We're not ignoring you, Paul. As Roger says, we had this conversation a couple of weeks ago while you were having a nap
But to save you the bother of looking, the reminiscences of those of us who remember it went something like:
We're all going to die
and then ... we didn't.

Well yes, I would have read that thread, but didn't have time due to real-world pressures..

Funnily enough it doesn't really retain in my memory as being an 'end of the world' situation, possibly because I was contemplating buying our first house as well as deeply enjoying life/work in the TSR2 Design office at Weybridge & attending day release at Brookland College trying to pass my exams! Not only that - it was a case of 'Kismet' - in other words what the h*ll could I do about it anyway.
Bit thick aren't I!!!!
BTW - Off topic- what about the Mayan calendar ending this year!

Nor do I remember it in apocalyptic terms . My overriding recollection was the Minister of Defence , who I think was Harold Watkinson , coming on TV and saying that although the situation was a serious one, the UK was taking no unusual military steps . I can recall that in the early evening of the same day I was coming home from work and could see the sky absolutely covered in contrails, which rather gave the lie to what he had said.

I was 16, and due to being in the Tunbridge Wells CND movement and a disciple of Bob Dylan, I felt it my duty to take it personally. I remember thinking that we were about to die because nobody believed that Krushchev would back off. I distinctly remember feeling how unfair it was, considering that I had a whole life that I was about to live and what a waste it would be if I couldn't live it. I moped around drinking brown ale and listening to 'A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall' and wondering if it would be quick, painful or take a long time. I figured we didn't live close enough to a target for it to be quick so I thought that was unfair as well.
So in hindsight I didn't contribute much to the solution but I did get fed up with brown ale.

I don't remember a thing becasue I was only 4 months old!
I was however reminded of it in Eddies near miss refueling thread when Ben posted the BBC link regarding the B52's loosing their H bombs. One of the things about the search I thought of was the naval deep sea diver Carl Brashear who was aboard the Hoist searching for the bomb that dropped into the sea. He lost his leg on that mission. And then fought back against all odds and recertified as the only naval deep sea Master diver to do it with a prosthetic leg.
There were many incredible things that happened in 62. One of which has enriched even your lives.

I seem to remember one of our big exercises was brought forward round about then and I definitely remember a lot of "to Fidel with love" being written in the soot round the gun ports during air to air firing. But, Hey! We survived.
