Three bikes go into a bar....

Post by airboatr »

A carbon fiber, an aluminum, and a steel bike

... some drinking ensues. As is normal Carbon and Aluminum drink too much of the "black stuff" and begin arguing between themselves while Steel remains on his stool sipping his VSOP quietly watching the two young bucks go at it.

"Vertical compliance!" shouts Carbon.

"Laterally stiff!" retorts Aluminum.

"Oh yeah? High modulus!" fires back Carbon.

"Power transfer!" counters Aluminum.

Steel, still sitting on his stool savoring the VSOP, has pretty much had enough of this, reaches behind the bar and grabs a ball peen hammer.

THWACK THWACK!!!

Steel nails the top tube of the two loudmouths and they both crumple to the ground in agony.

"Why did you do that?!" pleads both Carbon and Aluminum almost in unison.

"In all your arguing you forgot 'resilience' and 'repairability'...I figured you needed a lesson in both."

Steel replaces the hammer behind the bar, sips the last of the VSOP, and rides away...

SO, guess what I bought yesterday?

That's right an aluminum bike.
And gues what I did to it today? I broke it. :wall: ripped the derailleur off... :((

Dave

I'm sat here asking myself the same thing!

Yeah ripped the treads from the hanger bracket that the derailleur is bolted to mate.
there are two quick ways to fix it. Drill and use a heicoil or drill and fit an insert.
There is a third option: fill the hole and redrill and tap.
hopefully I can avoid having to take the bike to my buddies shop and use his tig.

Well at least it broke just up the street from home.

Oh ..As for the three bikes story... it's BS. ;)

I dunno which of those options I'd like to choose *-) If the bolts snapped, can you not 'ease' em out? Best to stay with 'standard' fitment if you can. If they won't budge, I guess I'd go for helicoil. Bit of a bummer as you only got it yesterday :( Oh.. it's not one of those expensive jobs with the Lipo pack is it :worried:

Dave,

Naw mate the bolt dint break. It was pulled out.
And btw broke the chain.
I bought it 2nd hand cheap. I think I know why now!
I'm having a feeling it was already strpped and they jammed it back in.
But for what I paid, I won't complain. It an easy fix and besides if that's a weak point then I'm glad it showed itself now so I can fix it. I'm thinking I'll use the insert because it has a flange that will support the derailleur from the back side of the hanger. . Very little chance of it happening again.

As to your lipo question. I bought the aluminum bike to fit the electrics on being that it's much lighter that my steel bike.

Yep.. that makes sense mate. Bolts don't just allow themselves to be pulled out. I'd guess your summary is accurate.. thread already stripped and bodged back. Under these circumstances, I'd go for the insert too ;)

Waiting to see a vid of it with the Lipo's fitted

Yo Joe :hello:

It looks like it had been used with that hanger bolt loose for some time mate and looking at the edges of some of the teeth on those cogs.. it's been a well used machine! I dunno how it's stayed in gear :-O

Ah well.. at least you know it's been run-in

:hello:

Fixed.
As you can see there isn't a whole lot of metal on the left and right (as you're looking at it in the photo) to support the derailleur.
If I'd used the helicoil, there would be other loads the metal would have to carry besides the weight and working load of the derailleur.
. The tapping process for the helicoil would tend to push the aluminum out before the thread is cut into the wall of the hole. Secondly, the helicoil itself would add a constant pressure to the radius of the hole, increasing the risk of the metal to streach and break.
The insert doesn't add those stresses to the metal. Infact it helps support the metal with the flange of the insert sandwiching the hanger to the mounting surface of the derailluer.

The wear and tear on the freewheel is of no consequence, Dave. The electric drive wheel comes with. ;)

Since the damge to my bike, D a v e.
I've hand my eyeglasses come apart in my hands after I washed them and open the temples to put them on.
You remember a while ago I posted a thread on getting these glasses about a year and a half ago. You can rememeber back that far right?
Ok I mentioned that the Optometris told me they will not break, They're Titanium, so they can not ever break.
Want to see a piccy of that too? Maybe I should post it and get some feed back on what it is you see.
just remember It isn't breakage, It's gotta be something else becasue these here glasses can not do that, _Break

Ah well,

Oh and my bike carrier broke this morning too.

ALways look on the bright side of life.

That's a fine job on the gear hanger Joe

Yes, I remember your new glasses and the initial trouble you had. Now.. to have them 'fall apart'.. I won't say break because they CAN'T break.. I'd say another visit to the opticians is in order, at least to find out what has happened to them as they've obviously NOT broken. Perhaps he can advise how you might wear them in their current state? Maybe if you put your head under an 18-wheeler, they'll fit a treat but your hat's wouldn't fit *-) The answer is out there
