Winds are picking up in this part of Canuckistan today and are likely to get worse before they get better. We should miss the worst of it (with a bit of luck) and only catch the western edge. Currently seeing gusts up to 60 KPH (37 MPH) with the prospect of 100 KPH (62 MPH) overnight tonight.

My cousin and her hubby are in Kauai Is at the mo and had to evacuate their hotel for a few hours yesterday when the Tsunami warning was issued. Fortunately, they were allowed to go back after a few hours when the warning became an advisory. Now.. they fly from Kauai to SFO tomorrow to pick up a flight SFO to Washington, Dulles and are wondering if they're going to get there

I've just had a look at the FAA Air traffic command site and thus far, all major airports in the US are operating normally.. 0-15min delay. It's a few hours before they fly out though so anything could happen. A great holiday.. low flypast from a tsunami on one coast then run into a hurricane on the other
I gather the hurricane is gaining strength so all you guys over there.. strap yourselves in and keep safe

Wow, I hope your family gets back to Washington tomorrow, Dave.

It's going to be a messy week aviation wise for the east coast. We're closed at Dulles today but hope to be open for business mid morning tomorrow. Fingers crossed for your family.

Hi Brian
This is the site I checked the delays on..
http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp
I was shocked to here Dulles was closed as it shows normal delays. However, add the airport you want to go to in the box above and it tells a different story

Lihue to SFO is 1307-2118 tomorrow - UA351 (1307 being local) and their flight to Washington from SFO is 2239 - 0708 UA1060 (2259 being local SFO time). Certainly starting to look a little bumpy already

I'm sure United will get them through

Hurricane in late October? A huge storm. Wow! Both Dulles an Reagan are closed for flights. Just about everything else is closed including the government, schools, and all puublic transportation. Lots of rain so far and getting stronger winds now.The worst will be around 17:00 today until 2:00 on Tuesday. Eastern Summer Time (clocks go back next Sunday) There is a good chance the power will go out but I have my fingers crossed. Anyway, I am fine so far and thanks for your concern. Think I will hide in my basement.
Keep calm and cary on. This too will pass!

The UK is watching very closely, Nigel. It's very big on the news and we are all holding our breath. I can't imagine how you're feeling with that thing bearing down on you. Keep your heads down and let us know how you get on.
I wish you all the very best of luck.

We mustn't forget there are other Nations involved too and it seems that Haiti has been particularly badly hit.
Thousands of people who have little enough as it is, have lost everything again.
At least 65 already reported dead.

That's true Garry. I can't imagine how it must be to ride out a storm like this from inside a plywood and tin dwelling.

The hurricane has now made landfall in southern New Jersey. It's going to be a long night for lots of folks.

Stay dry and safe Nigel.
