A nice story all the same though. Particularly that the business Giles (sp) was still trading albeit in different merchandise, but in these days or corporate giants etc blah de blah .......

That's a great story, its amazing what is still about,

Mind you when you think the average wage back in 1940 was between £2-3 a week that toy was still a lot of money,

I was born in 1941 and boy do i regret not looking after my toys from the late 40's, Dinky toy models of Planes and Automobiles fetch a fine old price nowadays infact some of the boxes that Dinky models came in are worth as much as the models,

Cheers,

Roger.

What an ugly little toy. Oh well, I guess it's an investment. The newspaper is what makes the article interesting imho. :)

Thing is Roger it because you and the rest of us didn't look after and save our toys they are worth such a lot

These modern collectors items all get saved so they will never get the rarity value of the not played with toys

True but it begs the question.. why have a toy and not play with it. First thing I used to do was bin the box (unless used as a temporary garage) and run the wheels off it  An unwanted toy (not that there were many) got destroyed a little quicker

That said.. I'm very good now. I keep all my toys in excellent condition and don't discard the boxes. Many have never been out of the boxes ;)

I don't mollycoddle items

If I buy something I use it, if it gets damaged, too bad.

I always played with my toys as that's what they were for

They were dirt cheap back in the day and you could bend their tin frames downward just enough to insert a firecracker. Ahh, happy days.

We were quite violent in those days.

One of our 'things' was shooting up Airfix models with air rifles :-O

There's a little pond next to what used to be a farm house (it's now a new estate!) I pass quite frequently and every time I do, I wonder if my Airfix Titanic is still at the bottom. We balanced it so it would float and cast it out into the pond.. on fire  Air rifles.. ah yes.. many a broken model ended up on the 'firing range'

I don't have fond memories of those tin cars mind you. I remember getting my little finger trapped between the wheel and wheel arch when I was just a wee tiddler and when I tried to pull my finger out, the sharp wheel arch dug into my finger cutting the pad almost off :-O I still have the horseshoe scar to this day! Needless to say.. that particular car didn't meet a good end
